A Child’s Connection to God
Have you ever felt like your prayers were just words lost in the air, or wondered if anyone was really listening? Prayer can sometimes feel like a mysterious act, something we do out of routine or obligation. But what if we shifted our mindset? What if we saw prayer as a privilege—a direct conversation with the Creator of the universe, who listens to us intimately, like a father listening to his beloved child?
There’s an extraordinary connection that takes place when we pray. It’s more than just speaking requests into the air. Romans 8:15-16 reminds us of this when it says, “And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” When we come to God in prayer, we’re not just presenting needs—we’re engaging with our Father, the one who deeply cares for us. Prayer becomes an act of intimacy, an expression of trust, and a source of peace.
The Shift: Moving from Duty to Privilege
When I was younger, I approached prayer as an obligation—something I had to do. During my time in the military at just 17, learning to navigate life on my own away from my parents, prayer often felt like another task to complete. Between the early morning physical training sessions and the discipline required, I treated it like checking off another box. I prayed when I remembered, but there wasn’t much heart in it.
That perspective shifted over time. As I grew in my faith, I began to see prayer as more than a duty—it became my lifeline. Romans 8 speaks to the profound privilege we have as children of God. We aren’t distant from Him. He’s already given us His greatest gifts: His Son, Jesus Christ; the Holy Spirit; forgiveness; and the promise of eternal life. Prayer is our way of staying connected to those gifts daily. It’s not about asking for things—it’s about drawing closer to the One who loves us beyond measure.
The Supernatural Power of Prayer
When we pray, something supernatural happens. We are connecting the strongest part of ourselves—our spirit—with the strongest force in the universe—God’s Spirit. It’s not just words; it’s a spiritual exchange that aligns our hearts with God’s will. Prayer reminds us that we are God’s children, and because of this, we can approach Him with confidence, knowing He cares about every detail of our lives.
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that there’s a “right” way to pray or that we need to spend hours in prayer for it to count. But I’ve learned that God isn’t waiting for eloquence—He’s waiting for honesty. The simplicity of heartfelt prayers holds incredible power. Martin Luther once said, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” This resonates deeply because prayer, much like breath, sustains our spiritual life. Without it, we can easily feel disconnected, restless, and anxious.
Personal Example: The Power of Simple Prayers
I remember a time when I was lost in uncertainty after completing a long-term project. I wasn’t sure what was next for me, and instead of crafting perfect prayers, I simply told God how I felt. I prayed for clarity in those quiet moments before bed—brief, honest prayers. Over the next few weeks, doors began to open in unexpected ways. My prayers weren’t lengthy or particularly eloquent, but they were sincere, and that’s what mattered.
Philippians 4:6-7 offers this encouragement: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Those short prayers gave me peace, even when I didn’t have all the answers. That peace became my anchor in the uncertainty of life, reminding me that God was walking with me, guiding me through each step.
Prayer as a Daily Practice
What I’ve come to realize is that prayer doesn’t have to be complicated to be powerful. Start small—commit to just five minutes a day. As you begin to speak with God regularly, you’ll notice how your heart begins to align with His. Over time, those five minutes can expand into longer moments of reflection and conversation with Him. The key is consistency, not perfection. When we make prayer a regular part of our daily routine, we’ll begin to see transformation in both our circumstances and ourselves.
Corrie Ten Boom said, “Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees.” This has shaped how I approach prayer in my own life. It’s easy to put prayer off, thinking we’ll get to it later, but making it a priority—an appointment—strengthens our relationship with God.
Self-Assessment
1. How consistently am I making time for prayer in my daily routine, and how has it impacted my connection with God and sense of peace?
2. In what ways can I shift my mindset from seeing prayer as a duty to embracing it as a privilege and opportunity for deeper intimacy with God?
Reflections
As I reflect on my own journey with prayer, I realize how much my perspective has shifted over time. What once felt like an obligation has become a cherished privilege—a sacred space where I connect with God, not out of duty, but out of a genuine desire to grow closer to Him. Prayer is no longer something I do because I feel I have to; it’s something I want to do because I’ve experienced its transformative power in my life.
I’ve come to understand that prayer isn’t about getting the words right or dedicating a specific amount of time—it’s about consistently showing up and trusting that God is listening, even in the moments when I don’t have all the answers. The peace that flows from these conversations with God, whether brief or extended, is a reminder that I am never alone in my struggles or my joys.
It’s easy to let life’s busyness push prayer to the background, but I’ve learned that making prayer a priority allows me to stay grounded, aligned with God’s will, and open to His guidance. Each time I pray, I’m reminded that God desires a relationship with me, and through prayer, I’m able to deepen that relationship day by day.
Reflecting on where I started and where I am now, I see how vital prayer has become—not just as a spiritual discipline, but as a source of strength, clarity, and peace. How will you allow prayer to transform your life?
