I had everything planned out—my career, my next move, even my weekend plans. But, like in so many moments of life, the path ahead dissolved into something unexpected. It reminded me of those times when life’s trajectory suddenly shifts, throwing us into waters we weren’t prepared for. That unsettling feeling of losing control is something I’ve experienced more than once, and it’s always disorienting.

Recently, I had a dream that captured this exact feeling. In the dream, my coworker and I were driving toward an event, and everything was going smoothly until it wasn’t. The dream left me feeling confused, yet it also offered a reflection on the unpredictability of life. I couldn’t help but see parallels to the unexpected turns I’ve faced in real life—turns that tested my resilience and taught me how to move forward even when things seemed out of control.

The Dream Unfolded

In the dream, I was in France, traveling with my coworker. We were driving in her car, heading to an event, enjoying the journey. The road ahead seemed clear, the direction obvious, until we came to an abrupt end. The freeway stopped, but we didn’t—and before we knew it, we were plunging into the ocean.

The shock of being submerged in water was visceral. The car was soaked, and so were we. But somehow, we managed to pull ourselves—and the car—out of the water. Just when we thought we had control again, the car took off on its own, leaving us behind. As we waded through the water, trying to find our way back, my coworker suddenly froze, staring down at the ground as though she were stuck in place. I called out to her, and she snapped out of it, but it left me deeply unsettled, wondering if something more was happening with her.

This dream wasn’t just a series of strange events—it was a reflection of life’s detours and challenges. The moments where you think everything is under control, only to realize how quickly things can change.

Reflecting on the Symbols:

The dream mirrored many moments in my own life when things didn’t go as planned. The sudden end of the freeway felt like those times when I thought I had everything figured out, only to be thrown into an unexpected situation—like when I had to abruptly relocate for work. The shock of being submerged in the ocean? That overwhelming feeling of emotions, uncertainty, and anxiety that hits when life takes you into uncharted water. I remember a specific moment when my job security was suddenly pulled out from under me, and I was left wondering how I was going to keep my head above water. But like in the dream, I found a way out—even if I felt a little lost along the way.

The car driving away on its own represented that loss of control—something I’ve felt in my own life when situations moved beyond what I could manage. Like when I lost my mom, everything seemed to spin out of control. It was as though my life was moving on without me, and I couldn’t get a grip on it.

My coworker freezing, however, was the part of the dream that stuck with me the most. It reminded me of times when people close to me, and even myself, have felt paralyzed by fear or uncertainty. Whether it’s the fear of failure or feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands, sometimes we freeze in place, unsure of how to move forward.

Finding Strength in Scripture

In these moments of unpredictability, I’ve often turned to scripture to find clarity and strength. One verse that has guided me through life’s detours is Proverbs 16:9, which says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” This verse has always reminded me that, no matter how much I plan, life has its own way of unfolding. It’s a comfort to know that even when the road changes unexpectedly, there’s a purpose in the direction I’m being led.

Another verse that resonates with the imagery in my dream is Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” This scripture beautifully captures the idea that even in moments where we feel overwhelmed—like being submerged in water—we are never alone. I’ve felt this reassurance in my own life, especially during times when I didn’t know how I would move forward.

Finally, Philippians 4:6-7 always offers me peace in chaotic times: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This scripture reminds me to let go of my anxieties and trust in a peace that transcends circumstances—like when my coworker snapped out of her frozen state, moving forward with renewed clarity.

Wisdom from the Wise:

While reflecting on this dream and life’s detours, several quotes came to mind that resonate with the challenges of navigating unexpected changes. Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” I’ve leaned on this wisdom countless times, especially when life seemed to veer off course. It’s the courage to keep going, even when we’re not sure where the road will lead, that defines us.

Another quote that has stayed with me through difficult times comes from Helen Keller: “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” Life is filled with hardships, but it’s through facing them that we grow. When the road ends unexpectedly, it’s not the end of the journey—it’s just another challenge to overcome.

Finally, C.S. Lewis’ words echo deeply in my heart: “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” It’s easy to see life’s detours as setbacks, but often, they’re the very experiences that prepare us for something greater.

Soul Insights

1. Embrace Life’s Detours

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and that’s where the greatest lessons lie. When the freeway ends and you find yourself submerged, take a breath. These moments of uncertainty often lead to the most significant personal growth.

2. Surrender Control

The car driving away in my dream symbolized the moments in life where we must let go. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that while we may plan, life’s path is directed by something greater than ourselves. Letting go of the need to control every outcome opens us up to new possibilities.

3. Reach Out When Stuck

When my coworker froze, it was my call that snapped her out of it. Sometimes, when we feel stuck, it takes the support of others to keep us moving. Don’t be afraid to lean on those around you when life feels overwhelming.

4. Find Stillness in Chaos

Isaiah 43:2 reminds us that we’re not alone in the waters. In times of chaos, find moments of stillness and prayer. I’ve found that peace doesn’t come from external circumstances, but from finding calm within.

5. Every Detour Leads to Growth

Life’s detours aren’t obstacles—they’re opportunities for growth. Whether it’s a career change, a personal setback, or an unexpected move, these moments shape us into who we’re meant to be. As C.S. Lewis reminds us, hardships prepare us for extraordinary things.

Final Thoughts:

As I reflect on this dream and the lessons it holds, I’m reminded that life’s greatest challenges often come when we least expect them. But just like in the dream, we have the strength to get out of the water, to move forward even when we feel stuck. Each detour, each unexpected turn, is an opportunity to learn, grow, and move closer to our purpose.

So the next time life throws you off course, how will you respond? Will you fight against the current, or will you trust that this detour is leading you somewhere greater? The choice is yours—and so is the growth that follows.

Yes, we have to embrace the detours or we take too long to regain our footing.
