Have you ever felt like you’re waiting forever for something to happen? A breakthrough in your career, a healing in your body, or a change in a relationship? It’s in these moments of waiting that our patience is tested and our faith stretched. But it is also during these times that we need to remember: God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels like nothing is happening. He knows exactly what we need and precisely when we need it. As it says in 2 Peter 3:8-9, “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” This verse reminds us that God’s timeline is different from ours, and what seems like a delay is often a moment of preparation.
While we wait for God’s perfect timing, we are not meant to be passive. There are active ways to strengthen our faith and align ourselves with His will during the waiting period. Here are some guiding steps to help us stay anchored:
- Believe: “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” (Micah 7:7) When life feels uncertain, this verse encourages us to believe that God is actively listening to our prayers and moving on our behalf, even when we can’t see it yet.
- Watch with Expectancy: “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3) This verse reminds us to approach each day with hope, laying our concerns before God and watching expectantly for His response.
- Hope: “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word, I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.” (Psalm 130:5-6) Just as a watchman waits for the first light of dawn, we should place our hope in God’s promises, knowing that His timing is always perfect.
- Trust: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Trusting God means surrendering our understanding of how things should be and allowing Him to lead us on a path that is best for us.
- Resist Fretting: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.” (Psalm 37:7-8) It’s easy to become anxious when we see others succeeding or when our plans are delayed. This verse reminds us to stay calm and trust in God’s timing.
- Be Strong: “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:13-14) Strength and courage are needed when waiting on God, knowing that His goodness will manifest in our lives.
- See Opportunity: “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.” (Lamentations 3:25) While waiting, we should actively seek God, seeing the waiting period as an opportunity to grow closer to Him.
- Pray Continually: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2) Prayer keeps us connected to God and helps us remain vigilant and grateful, even in times of waiting.
- Remember the Blessings: “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18) It’s important to remember that God’s heart is full of grace and compassion toward us, and waiting on Him brings blessings beyond measure.
One of the most powerful examples of God’s perfect timing is found in the story of the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4. She was a well-to-do woman with a comfortable life, a nice home, and influential friends, but she lacked one thing—she was barren, and her husband was old. Despite this, she remained generous and kind, always making room for the prophet Elisha whenever he came through town. She didn’t do this expecting anything in return; she simply had a servant’s heart.
But one day, God inspired Elisha to bless her with the one thing she had long given up hope on—a child. When Elisha told her, “About this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms” (2 Kings 4:16), her first response was disbelief. She even said, “No, my lord! Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!” She had resigned herself to her situation, thinking that dream was too good to be true. Yet, within a year, she was holding her baby boy. What she thought was impossible became a miraculous reality.
This story illustrates how God knows how to inspire the hearts of others to be good to us, to align the right people at the right time to bless us in ways we may never have imagined. As long as we keep doing the right thing, honoring God, and staying faithful, we position ourselves to receive His blessings. Sometimes, we unknowingly place limits on God because we are conditioned to think within the boundaries of human possibility. But remember, God’s power is limitless. Reflect on the areas in your life where you’ve been hesitant to trust fully. Is it in your finances? Your health? Your relationships? What would happen if you took the limits off God and truly believed He could do the impossible?
God is a supernatural God; He created the universe, and He can make things happen that defy logic and seem impossible. So, take the limits off God. He holds blessings and provisions for those dreams that you may have given up on—for the business you thought was impossible, for the healing that seems delayed, for the relationship that seems broken beyond repair, or for the exam that feels too difficult to pass. “About this time next year” is not just a line from an ancient story; it’s a promise that can be true for you.
A Prayer for Trusting God’s Timing:
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are the Almighty God who knows exactly what I need and when I need it. Help me to trust You more deeply, to keep my heart open to Your timing, and to let go of my own expectations. I believe that as I walk in faith and obedience, You will lead me to the blessings You have prepared for me. Give me the strength to wait with hope, trust, and patience. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
While we wait for God’s perfect timing, let’s actively engage in our faith. Believe His promises, stay hopeful, trust in His plan, and keep moving forward in obedience. Your “about this time next year” moment could be just around the corner. Remember, God’s timing is always perfect, and while we wait, we are growing, learning, and being prepared for the blessings that are to come. Take a moment to reflect and trust that God is working everything out for your good.
