Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everything seemed uncertain and you had no idea what the future held? In 2010, after dealing with some pressing family matters up north, I found myself jobless and in desperate need of a fresh start. I decided to move back to the City of Angels, hoping to rebuild my life. Without a stable place to stay, I reached out to a friend and ended up couch-surfing for almost a year while searching for employment. This period was extremely challenging, but fortunately, I was able to collect unemployment despite my previous company contesting it.

My full-time job became writing résumés and applying to over 25 jobs per day. The daily grind was exhausting and often demoralizing, especially after several disappointing interviews. However, persistence paid off when an agency finally reached out. They wanted to interview me and had me fill out paperwork for a background check.

One month passed without any word. Then two months. I understood the delay since I had lived in various cities and states, but the uncertainty was nerve-wracking. My unemployment benefits were dwindling, and I was running out of time. In desperation, I decided to apply for a teaching position overseas and started the certification process.

Just as I was nearing the end of my certification, I received a call from the agency. They informed me that my background check was complete and asked when I could start. I eagerly responded that I could begin the following week, but the HR person suggested starting in mid-August to align with the new pay period. Relieved, I accepted. Had they not called when they did, I would have left Los Angeles to teach English in Korea.

This entire ordeal taught me several invaluable lessons.

Soul Insights

1. Have Patience

Job searching requires a great deal of patience. It took me nearly a year to find employment, but staying persistent was key. There were days when I felt like giving up, but patience kept me going.

2. Have Faith

From my life experiences, I learned to have faith that things would work out. The effort I put into my job search, despite the setbacks, eventually led to success. There were moments of doubt, but maintaining faith helped me stay motivated.

3. Things Will Always Work Out

Life has a way of working out, no matter the obstacles. Whether I ended up in Korea or Los Angeles, I knew I would find a job eventually. The distress I experienced wasn’t worth it because, in the end, I landed where I needed to be.

4. Pray a Lot

Though I didn’t mention it earlier, prayer was a significant part of my daily routine. It helped ease my worries and calm my nerves, reinforcing my faith and patience. Prayer became my anchor during this turbulent time, providing a sense of peace and hope.

Through patience, faith, and prayer, I navigated this challenging period and emerged stronger and more resilient. This experience taught me that with perseverance and a positive mindset, we can overcome even the toughest situations.
