After three years of living in Hawaii, I chose Whidbey Island, Washington as my next home. The movie “Sleepless in Seattle” painted Seattle as a romantic city, and I wanted to experience it for myself. While I didn’t live directly in Seattle, I settled in Oak Harbor, about a two-hour drive north. The proximity to the city made it an appealing choice.
I vividly remember flying out from sunny Hawaii, the land of Aloha, to the cold climate of Washington state. Doubts crept in—had I made the right decision? I felt a profound sense of loneliness. The cold weather mirrored my emotions, as I grappled with leaving everything I loved behind, including my then-boyfriend. We decided to break up before I left. He was uncertain about his future and wasn’t keen on a long-distance relationship. The breakup left me feeling confused and sad, with shattered dreams of a family. I felt unresolved but tried to push through these feelings, focusing on the transition to my new life.
As I settled into my new home and workplace, I began to explore and make friends. Driving down the I-5 and the 405, I marveled at the fresh air of the Northwest and the smell of rain. I enjoyed my weekend trips to Seattle, often staying with an older married couple I knew from church. Spending time with them felt like visiting grandparents—they made homemade bread and cooked dinner, creating a warm, familial atmosphere.
Despite the cold, I found beauty in my surroundings. Some of my Seattle friends ran a coffee shop, introducing me to the local coffee culture. Back then, Starbucks was just a neighborhood spot, not the global brand it is today. My first taste of lattes hooked me. The cold weather and my job as a night receptionist at a military housing complex made coffee a necessity. Working nights, I relied on coffee to stay awake, and it quickly became my drug of choice.
While in Washington, I met a coworker who gave me invaluable advice about colleges in Los Angeles. His guidance led me to attend Santa Monica College and eventually UCLA.
Reflecting on my journey from Hawaii to Washington, I’ve come to appreciate the profound impact that change, community, and openness can have on one’s life. What began as a challenging and uncertain transition eventually became a period of significant personal growth. Embracing new experiences, cultivating friendships, and staying open to opportunities transformed my life in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
The cold climate of Washington, initially a stark contrast to the warmth of Hawaii, became a backdrop for discovering the warmth of human connections and the richness of new experiences. From the comforting smells of homemade bread and fresh coffee to the invaluable advice that shaped my educational path, every moment contributed to my journey of self-discovery and resilience.
In Seattle, I learned that life is about more than just enduring changes—it’s about thriving in them. It’s about finding beauty in the unfamiliar and forging connections that turn a new place into a home. These lessons continue to guide me, reminding me that with an open heart and a willingness to adapt, every new chapter holds the promise of growth and fulfillment.
