Faith Over Fortune

Are you superstitious?

Why I Trust God More Than Superstitions

Some people avoid walking under ladders.

Others knock on wood, cross their fingers, or refuse to open umbrellas indoors as if the universe keeps a running tally of small offenses.

Superstitions are fascinating that way. Tiny rituals meant to control outcomes in a world that feels unpredictable.

But whenever someone asks me if I’m superstitious, my answer is simple.

No.

My trust sits somewhere far deeper than lucky charms or whispered rituals. I believe in God. And I also believe that the thoughts we nurture shape the reality we experience.

Faith and mindset together create a very different way of walking through life.

Not fearfully.

But deliberately.

Fear Looks for Signs. Faith Looks for God.

Superstitions operate on fear.

Break a mirror and seven years of bad luck supposedly follows. See a black cat and suddenly the day feels doomed. Step on a crack and someone’s mother pays the price. The logic behind these ideas has always been thin, yet people cling to them because uncertainty makes humans uncomfortable.

Faith offers a completely different foundation.

Instead of scanning the environment for bad omens, faith teaches us to trust the One who governs everything. Scripture puts it plainly: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). That verse removes the pressure to decode hidden signals from the universe.

Writer Madeleine L’Engle once observed, “Those who believe in magic often look for signs; those who believe in God look for meaning.” That distinction matters.

Superstition searches for control.

Faith seeks relationship.

The Mind Is a Powerful Architect

While I reject superstition, I do believe our thoughts shape the direction of our lives.

Mindset influences choices. Choices influence actions. Actions shape outcomes.

The Bible acknowledges this psychological truth thousands of years before modern neuroscience caught up. “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). The inner world eventually becomes the outer one.

Philosopher Marcus Aurelius wrote something strikingly similar centuries later: “Our life is what our thoughts make it.”

When people constantly expect misfortune, they interpret every inconvenience as proof that the universe is against them. When people live with gratitude and trust, even difficult seasons can carry purpose.

Faith shifts the mental lens.

Instead of asking, “What bad luck is coming next?” the better question becomes, “What is God doing here?”

God’s Plans Are Bigger Than Luck

Luck is random.

Faith is relational.

One suggests life is a cosmic lottery. The other recognizes a guiding hand shaping circumstances beyond what we can see in the moment.

This perspective transforms how challenges are interpreted. Scripture reminds us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him” (Romans 8:28). That promise doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means nothing in our lives is meaningless.

Author C.S. Lewis captured the idea beautifully when he wrote, “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.”

Faith isn’t a charm we carry once.

It’s a relationship we choose daily.

And that relationship carries far more power than any superstition ever could.

Soul Insights

1. Superstitions grow where uncertainty lives

Humans naturally want explanations for things that feel unpredictable. Superstitions attempt to create a sense of control over events that remain outside human power. These rituals become small psychological shields against anxiety. Faith offers a stronger foundation because it shifts the focus from controlling outcomes to trusting God’s character. Trust replaces fear when belief centers on who God is rather than what might go wrong.

2. Thoughts quietly shape the architecture of life

The mind constantly plants seeds through beliefs, expectations, and interpretations. Over time those seeds influence decisions, behaviors, and relationships. Positive expectation alone cannot control reality, yet mindset influences how opportunities are recognized and pursued. Scripture acknowledges this connection between thinking and living. A disciplined mind creates a clearer path for faith, purpose, and growth.

3. Faith invites partnership rather than prediction

Superstition attempts to predict or manipulate future outcomes through rituals or signs. Faith operates through relationship with God rather than attempts to decode cosmic hints. Life becomes a conversation instead of a guessing game. Prayer replaces lucky charms. Trust replaces anxious scanning for omens.

4. Meaning transforms how life’s events are interpreted

Two people can experience the same event and interpret it completely differently. One person sees bad luck while another sees redirection or growth. Faith trains the heart to search for meaning instead of assuming randomness. God often works through situations that initially appear confusing or inconvenient. Perspective determines whether life feels chaotic or guided.

5. Faith frees the mind from constant fear

Superstitious thinking can trap people in cycles of worry about invisible forces influencing their lives. Faith removes that burden because God remains sovereign over every circumstance. Life becomes less about avoiding imaginary curses and more about living with courage and gratitude. The mind relaxes when trust replaces anxiety. Confidence grows because the future rests in stronger hands than our own.

Final Thoughts

Superstitions try to shrink life into a series of fragile rules.

Faith expands it into a relationship with a living God.

One path keeps people checking for bad omens. The other allows them to move forward with confidence, knowing that every step unfolds under divine guidance.

My trust doesn’t sit in lucky numbers or hidden signs.

It rests in God.

And when faith leads the way, even uncertainty becomes a place where purpose can grow.

Your Turn

What beliefs shape the way you interpret the events in your life?

Do they lead you toward fear… or toward trust?

Take a moment today to examine the thoughts you allow to guide your decisions. The mind carries more influence than we often realize, and faith has a way of redirecting that influence toward hope.
