There was a man who carried a pouch of seeds. As he passed through the fields, he cast them out with his hand. Some he threw into good soil, some he let fall on stones, some scattered where the thorns grew. His hand was quick, and his voice was loud in speaking of how fine the seeds were.

But when his hand was empty, the man did not stay. He did not press the seeds into the ground, nor cover it with earth. He brought no water to soften the soil, nor did he guard the field from the birds of the air. He did not rise early to tend it, nor return at evening to see what had grown.

After many days, the field lay the same as before. A few sprouts pushed through, but the sun scorched them. Others were carried away, and still others choked by weeds. And so, though the man had scattered much, he harvested nothing.

If a man scatters but does not tend, is he a faithful sower, or is he careless? If his seed never grows to fruit, is the failure in the ground, or in his neglect? What do you say of this man? What should he have done? What would you say to this man?
