Was today typical?

It’s such a small question—often tossed out like a pebble across the surface of a day—but it sent me spinning. Because the truth is, I don’t know what typical means anymore. Or maybe I never did.
Sure, there are routines. Alarm clocks and to-do lists and coffee poured into the same chipped mug. But beyond the familiar surface, something else is always stirring—something holy, unpredictable, wild. I shift. I notice. I breathe in a different grace than the day before. And suddenly, I’m not just living a repeat of yesterday. I’m creating something unrepeatable.
Every Day, A New Canvas
There’s a myth that life falls into sameness. That once we hit a rhythm, we’re just walking on autopilot through days that look like copies. But have you really looked? Because underneath the patterns are infinite variations.
Today, I woke up and did the “usual”—prayer, stretches, tea. But then… I played a new song on the piano. I thought a thought I’ve never had before. I said something differently. I noticed the light hitting the wall in a way that made me pause. My mind rearranged atoms. My soul made subtle shifts. And that changes everything.
“You can’t step into the same river twice.” – Heraclitus
Scripture calls it too:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23
God’s mercy doesn’t come in bulk packages. It’s delivered fresh, every sunrise. Which means that no two days can be typical. He doesn’t repeat miracles. He personalizes them.
The Illusion of “Normal”
When people ask about my “typical day,” I think what they really want to know is: Do you have structure? Predictability? Something that grounds you?
Sure. I have anchors. Morning prayer. Writing. The comfort of routines. But what breathes life into my days is the way the unexpected always finds me. A text from an old friend. A line of poetry I didn’t plan to write. A sudden insight while washing dishes.
“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.” – Mary Jean Irion
The ordinary isn’t ordinary. It’s sacred. But we miss that when we try to define a day by how repeatable it feels.
Scriptures That Reframe “Typical”
Isaiah 43:19 – “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” God doesn’t just create—He keeps creating. Every day, He’s stirring up something never-before-seen.
Proverbs 16:9 – “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
I can map out a plan, but heaven has its own choreography.
Psalm 118:24 – “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
This day. This version of you. Not yesterday’s leftovers. Today is handcrafted.
Soul Insights
Why Typical Is a Myth
1. Movement Happens in the Micro.
Small shifts—thoughts you almost didn’t notice, breath patterns, moments of stillness—can realign your entire trajectory. Pay attention to the tiny miracles.
2. You’re Not the Same You as Yesterday.
You carry new wisdom, different energy, and unseen grace today. Even your cells have turned over. Of course your day is different.
3. Your Spirit Is Listening, Even When You’re Not.
Sometimes your day feels off because your soul is working out something deep beneath the surface. Trust that.
4. God Isn’t in the Repeats—He’s in the Revelation.
He reveals Himself in daily glimpses, not grand fireworks. The newness you crave is probably already unfolding inside your “ordinary.”
5. What You Call Disruption Might Be Divine Invitation.
An unexpected moment—an interruption, a detour—may be where heaven is trying to get your attention.
Final Thoughts: A Life That Defies the Template
So no, today isn’t typical. And thank God for that.
I don’t want to live a life that fits neatly into categories. I want to live awake. Aware that each day holds its own sacred fingerprint. I want to be surprised by how God shows up. I want to be available to mystery, even in the middle of my so-called routines.
“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” – Oscar Wilde
So don’t ask me what my typical day looks like. Ask me what I noticed today. Ask me what changed. Ask me where I felt God. Because the truth is, I’m not chasing normal. I’m chasing wonder.
And that changes everything.
