The Test That Tells the Truth

This morning, I sat with Psalm 105:19 (NLT) and it stopped me in my tracks:

“Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.”

It reminded me that before any promise unfolds—before the breakthrough, the platform, the answered prayer—God checks the soil of our heart.

And sometimes, that testing shows up through people we never expected. I remember a season when I was dating someone who constantly pulled on me emotionally. Every interaction left me depleted. I was trying to show up with kindness, trying to pour out with patience—but inside, I was withering. Mentally, spiritually, emotionally—I felt drained and invisible. It was like they kept asking for more, but never offered rest or nourishment in return.

At the time, I thought I was just trying to make the relationship work. Now I see clearly: it was a character test. God was showing me the parts of myself that needed boundaries, wisdom, and deeper dependence on Him rather than emotional affirmation. I was learning how to love well—without losing myself.

God doesn’t test us to punish us. He tests us to strengthen us for what’s coming.

God Tests Mothers, Too

The Bible doesn’t just tell us about kings and prophets being refined—it shows us mothers being forged in fire, too. Their stories whisper to us in the quiet moments, reminding us that motherhood—biological, spiritual, emotional—is one of the most sacred and stretching roles on earth.

Sarah’s Test: Confidence in the Impossible

Sarah was promised something her body told her was impossible. Years passed. Hopes delayed. And still, Hebrews 11:11 says she “considered Him faithful who had made the promise.” That kind of faith doesn’t come easy—it’s chosen, again and again. I’ve had “Sarah moments”—where nothing I saw lined up with what God had said. But faith isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s a quiet grip on hope when everything says, “Let go.”

Galatians 4:26–27 reminds us that we are children of promise, not limitation.

Hannah’s Test: Thankfulness in Surrender

Hannah begged God for a child, and when she received him, she gave him back. Her worship wasn’t conditional on her comfort. 1 Samuel 1:11–28 tells of a woman who honored her vow even when it cost her deeply. I’ve cried prayers like Hannah. Longed for things. And in some cases, I had to let go before I even fully received them. Love and surrender have walked hand-in-hand in my story more times than I can count.

Mary’s Test: Treasuring in the Tension

Mary said “yes” to something she didn’t fully understand. Luke 1:38 records her surrender: “Let it be to me according to your word.” She treasured the mysteries she didn’t yet comprehend. That resonates with me. I’ve had prayers I couldn’t explain to anyone—callings I felt deeply but couldn’t put into words. I’ve learned to treasure them silently, like Mary, holding space for what’s still becoming.

All Mothers Are Refined

Whether you’re nurturing children, mentoring others, carrying a dream, or loving those who pull from your spirit—your role is sacred. And your test isn’t proof that you’re failing; it’s evidence that you’re being forged.

Isaiah 66:13 says:

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”

And Proverbs 31:25–28 paints the picture of a woman who is clothed with strength and dignity—not because life was easy, but because she learned to trust God through the testing.

“Before God releases the dream, He strengthens the vessel.”

Soul Check: Self-Assessment Questions

1.) Where am I tempted to rush what God wants to refine?

Have I been trying to “graduate early” from a season God is still using to grow me?

2.) Am I choosing faithfulness even when it’s hidden?

Do I still walk in integrity and love when no one sees it but God?

3.) What has God entrusted to me that needs fresh care or conviction?

Is there a child, calling, or relationship I’ve been carrying half-heartedly out of fatigue or fear?

Final Thoughts: The Fire That Forms the Favor

Joseph’s robe was taken. His freedom was stolen. His story looked broken. But none of those things could touch his favor. His dream didn’t die in the pit—it was prepared there.

You may be walking through fire right now—emotionally depleted, spiritually stretched, or wondering if anyone sees how much you give. But God sees. And He’s not just testing you—He’s trusting you.

He’s shaping you into someone who can carry more.

He’s refining your tenderness into strength.

He’s preparing you not just for what’s next—but for who you’re becoming.

So to every woman carrying life, love, and legacy in her hands: you are in the furnace, but you are not alone.

“The days are long, but the years are short.” — Gretchen Rubin

But the formation? That lasts forever.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for seeing me—not just in what I do, but in who I’m becoming. Help me embrace this season of testing not with fear, but with faith. Strengthen my character. Refine my heart. And let me carry what You entrust to me with grace and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

Pause for a moment. Write down the area in your life that feels the most stretching right now. Name it. Then ask: What is God forming in me through this?

Share this post with a woman in your life who needs to know:

She’s not just being tested—she’s being trusted.

Let that truth carry you today. You’re not just surviving this season. You’re being shaped to shine in it.
