When the Fire Drill Hijacked My Day
The fire drill caught me off guard. One minute I was settling in at my desk, the next, alarms blared and everyone was rushing down the stairs. That’s exactly how my entire day felt—disrupted, out of sync, and completely off-script.
We crave control, don’t we? We map out our days, stack our tasks, and expect everything to flow. But when reality shows up with its own plan, we’re left scrambling. I had multiple interruptions that day: woke up late, the fire drill, and later, my internet crashed just as I finally sat down to work on my manuscript.
Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord.” We see disorder. God sees opportunity. What feels like a frustrating delay may actually be the very thing He’s using to redirect and refine us.

Interruptions are inevitable, but how we respond makes all the difference. That day, when my internet failed, frustration surged immediately. My instinct was to scramble for a solution, to control the situation. But Psalm 46:10 whispered louder than my anxiety: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness wasn’t just physical—it meant loosening my grip on the need to fix everything right away. I sat back, took a breath, and let the moment be what it was. And in that pause, my mindset shifted from “I have to fix this” to “God, what are You showing me here?”
Later, when I left work, I noticed a dandelion glowing in the late afternoon sun. I was rushing to the parking lot, my mind full of to-do lists, but something about that dandelion made me stop. I pulled out my phone and crouched down to take a photo. That tiny pause felt like a holy interruption in itself—a reminder that even in the chaos, God plants beauty to anchor us.
Corrie ten Boom’s words came back to me: “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.” I realized how much of my strength had been leaking out through small frustrations all day long.
That evening, I went to a high school play I hadn’t thought much of—a simple favor for my coworker. I expected it to be fine, maybe even boring after a long day. But instead, I found myself laughing out loud, soaking in unexpected joy. Elisabeth Elliot once said, “God never denies us our heart’s desire except to give us something better.”
And right there, watching that play, it clicked: sometimes God’s “better” comes wrapped in small, surprising packages—ones we never saw coming because we were too focused on what we thought we wanted.
These moments—pausing instead of reacting, noticing beauty, receiving unexpected joy—became my pivots that day. Not dramatic, but powerful. Each one was a quiet shift that opened my heart to see God’s hand working in ways my plans never could have orchestrated.

God isn’t barging in with random disruptions—He’s shaping your story from every angle. Every delay, every shift, every detour is part of His greater design. And while it can frustrate us in the moment, pivoting with grace trains us to trust Him more deeply. These interruptions aren’t roadblocks; they’re part of the road itself.
