Where Wonder Begins

Today’s world is obsessed with the extraordinary — the louder, the bigger, the faster, the shinier.

But lately, I’m realizing that some of the most sacred moments aren’t found when life rushes forward — they’re found when I slow down and simply look.

Tonight was one of those moments.

No big fireworks. No dramatic revelation. Just a quiet walk, a few blooms of color, a chill in the evening air — and the quiet certainty that God was near.

“Sometimes we are so busy adding up our troubles that we forget to count our blessings.” — Anonymous

And maybe, just maybe, slowing down isn’t a luxury —maybe it’s a way of returning to what we were made for.

Walking Among Beauty

It started simply enough: a short evening walk. The first thing that caught my eye was the flowers — vibrant bursts of orange, deep purple, snowy white, and soft lavender.

I slowed down without thinking, drawn closer by their beauty, wanting to soak in every intricate detail.

The colors weren’t just pretty; they were alive.

They reminded me that life itself is bursting with tiny masterpieces we usually miss in our hurry.

The Bible says it simply:

“The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” — Psalm 33:5 (NKJV)

That goodness was right there, painted across ordinary sidewalks and simple street corners.

Stillness, Silence, and the Crowns in the Trees

As I kept walking, the neighborhood was unusually quiet. I passed maybe five people in total — a surprising stillness for a Saturday evening.

The palm trees stood like sentinels, their leaves fanning out like crowns against the slowly darkening sky.

I noticed the lights from the houses beginning to glow softly, one by one, as the evening settled deeper.

No loud noises. No urgent schedules.

Just the sound of my footsteps, the cool air brushing my face, and the sense that everything ordinary was whispering something sacred.

“Learn to pause, or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you.” — Doug King

And maybe, I thought, this is what David meant when he wrote:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Stillness doesn’t make God come closer —

it just makes it easier for me to notice He’s already here.

Gratitude Rising Naturally

As I soaked in the moment — the colors, the crowned trees, the hush — gratitude rose up unforced.

Not the kind you list because you feel you’re supposed to, but the kind that bubbles up simply because beauty and presence demand a response.

I thought about God, about how easily He could shout for attention if He wanted — but so often,

He chooses to whisper through ordinary things.

“God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.” — Mother Teresa

The Scripture echoes it too:

“After the fire came a gentle whisper.” — 1 Kings 19:12 (NIV)

Sometimes it’s not in the dramatic displays that we find Him —sometimes it’s in the soft, slow moments where the world grows quiet enough for our souls to listen.

Self-Assessment: Slowing Down to See

If you want to experience more of God’s nearness in your everyday life, here are three simple questions to quietly reflect on:

1. When was the last time I slowed down enough to really see the beauty around me?

2. Where might God be whispering to me through ordinary places or moments right now?

3. Have I been too busy looking for “big signs” that I’ve missed His quiet presence?

You don’t need a perfect answer.

You just need a willing heart to notice.

Final Thoughts

Tonight reminded me of something I never want to forget:

God doesn’t always announce Himself with fanfare.

Sometimes He’s waiting for me in a flower’s bloom, in the crown of a palm tree, in the quiet of a cold evening walk.

Slowing down isn’t falling behind.

It’s finding the hidden treasures tucked into the simplest places.

And maybe slowing down is one of the most powerful ways to remember that

the sacred is always hiding in the ordinary — if only we have eyes to see.
