The Pause That Saves You

Not every moment needs to be filled. Not every page needs to be packed. And not every answer comes through noise.

When I began arranging my haikus in my manuscript, something within me whispered, “Let them breathe.” I didn’t want each poem to be boxed in by paragraphs or buried in busyness. I wanted space. Stillness. A sacred pause.

And I realized—this wasn’t just about poetry. It was a way of life.

The Poetry of the Pause

Each haiku I’ve written holds something delicate—grief, insight, awe, surrender. Even though they’re just three lines, I give them their own breathing room on the page. Not because they’re small, but because they’re sacred.

I want the reader to pause, reflect, and feel before moving on. To let the words settle the way silence settles a restless heart.

“Silence is not the absence of something, but the presence of everything.” — Gordon Hempton

It’s in the space between where things begin to speak.

Haiku Pause

Breathe in the silence

Truth and clarity appear

Soul soothed, mind made clear

When Life Forced Me To Be Still

I didn’t always know how to welcome stillness. But life has a way of teaching us.

When my mom passed away, time shifted for me. I began to understand the fragility of life and the treasure of meaningful relationships. Not surface-level company, but deep, soul-bound connection. The kind that prays for you in secret. The kind that shows up without being asked.

After she was gone, I didn’t just miss her presence—I missed her essence. The way she made ordinary days feel like something worth remembering.

And in the silence that followed her death, I started hearing things I’d been too busy to notice: my grief, my longing, my need for God.

“Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted. Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.” — Hans Margolius

White Space as a Spiritual Practice

Now, when I write, I give space for words to rest. When I live, I try to do the same.

In the white space—those quiet in-betweens—I ask the harder questions:

What really matters?

What am I chasing?

Where am I hiding?

And slowly, clarity comes. Creativity awakens. Healing begins.

“The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” — Habakkuk 2:20 (NIV)

Stillness isn’t emptiness. It’s the meeting place between you and God.

Soul Insights

1. Stillness isn’t a stop—it’s a shift.

Like the pause in a song, it allows the melody of your life to unfold more beautifully.

2. You can’t hear God over constant noise.

Some of the most divine moments come not in chaos, but in the hush that follows surrender.

3. Avoiding silence is often avoiding self.

Stillness makes you face what you’ve been dodging. But facing it is where healing begins.

4. Reflection births wisdom.

As Psalm 4:4 says, “Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.”

The more you reflect, the more aligned you become with your true path.

5. Soul rest brings soul revelation.

Psalm 62:1 reminds us: “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.”

In white space, you don’t just rest. You remember who you are.

Final Thoughts: Letting The Light In

So many people fear silence because they equate it with loneliness or lack. But stillness is not a void—it’s a doorway.

“Stillness is not about focusing on nothingness; it’s about creating an emotional clearing to allow ourselves to feel, think, dream, and question.” — Brené Brown

When you pause, you give yourself permission to truly listen—to God, to your inner voice, to the quiet truths buried beneath the noise.

So whether you’re reading haikus or simply living your everyday life, let it breathe. Don’t rush the moment. Don’t drown the silence. Something beautiful might be waiting there.

Try This:

Take five minutes today to be still.

No music. No phone. Just you, your breath, and God.

Ask yourself gently:

What am I running from? What am I longing for?

And wait.

Let the answers find you in the white space.
