A quiet time reflection on calling, creativity, and trusting God’s pace

When Progress Feels Invisible

There’s a kind of restlessness that shows up when you know you were made for more, but the “more” hasn’t quite materialized yet.

That was the mood of my quiet time this week. The scripture that met me right where I was?

“I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.”
Ezekiel 34:25 (NIV)

Peace. Safety. Wilderness.
The words curled around me like a blanket—but also pricked something raw inside. I’ve been building things quietly behind the scenes—my blog, my poetry book, my dream of becoming self-sufficient through writing and creative tools. I’ve prayed to use these gifts for God’s glory and to bless others.

And yet, progress often feels so… slow.

The Fortress in the Fog

The wilderness for me looks like early mornings spent trying to squeeze writing between work and laundry. It looks like editing my haiku manuscript late into the night—then staring at the screen, wondering: Is any of this actually making a difference?

Last week, I almost deleted the whole thing. I was exhausted and discouraged. But then Ezekiel 34:25 came back to me.

“God, You’re my peace—even when I feel lost in the forest.”

And just like that, I felt grounded again. Not perfectly peaceful, but held.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Martin Luther King Jr.

The Vision: A Creative Life Anchored in Peace

Ezekiel’s vision is powerful: God promises peace before things are fixed. He removes the threats before we even see the transformation. He allows us to sleep in safety while still in the forest.

For me, the wilderness is the in-between:

  • The blog posts that don’t go viral
  • The poetry that hasn’t hit print
  • The dream of creative independence that still feels far off

But this verse reminds me that peace isn’t just the reward at the end—it’s the promise in the middle.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
Anne Lamott

The Intention: Trusting the Process

If I’m honest, my struggle isn’t just with timing—it’s with control. There’s a part of me that wants to force the dream into reality, to “make it happen” faster. But that drive often leads to burnout, not breakthrough.

God’s covenant of peace invites me to release that pressure. To create from a place of trust, not panic.
To believe that what I’m building is worth it, even if I can’t see the full picture yet.

“Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)

The Means: Surrender, Structure, and Stillness

This week, I’m holding onto three small, intentional practices:

1. Daily Release Prayer

“God, this dream is Yours. Help me walk at Your pace, not mine.”
A short prayer to hand the pressure back to Him.

2. Gentle Creative Rhythm

Writing with joy, not striving. Creating from abundance, not scarcity.

3. Celebrate Small Wins

Every finished blog post, every poem, every moment of insight—it all counts. It all adds up.

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”
Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)

3 Self-Reflection Questions

Take a moment to journal or pause with these:

  1. Where do you feel caught between your calling and your current circumstances?
What dreams feel stuck in the wilderness?
  2. What would it look like to live as if God’s peace is already available to you?
Not when things are finished—but now?
  3. What small step can you take this week to pursue your purpose without panic?
    Something simple, honest, and faithful?

Final Thoughts: Becoming in the Wilderness

Sometimes the most important work is happening underground—roots growing quietly, unseen. God’s covenant of peace doesn’t mean there won’t be wilderness. It means we can rest within it, knowing we’re not walking alone.

He is with us in the messy drafts, the long process, the quiet years.
He rejoices in our beginnings.
And He’s not measuring our success by speed—but by faithfulness.

“You may not see it now, but your wilderness is full of seeds.”
unknown

So I’ll keep showing up.
Keep writing.
Keep trusting that peace is already here, even if the breakthrough hasn’t arrived yet.
