Why your routine isn’t as repetitive as you think

“How are you?”

Oh, you know… same old, same old.

We say it like it means nothing.

We shrug, we smile, we move on.

But what if we’re wrong?

What if the phrase “same old, same old” is one of the biggest lies we’ve learned to live with?

What if, in brushing off the uniqueness of each day, we’ve numbed ourselves to the beauty right in front of us?

The Danger of the Default Response

There’s something about routine that makes us believe we’ve seen this episode before.

We wake up. Shower. Grab breakfast. Commute. Clock in. Respond to emails. Maybe even eat the same lunch. It feels familiar, so we label it as “the same.”

But here’s the truth: every day holds a new grace.

Even if the surface looks the same, the soul of it is always shifting.

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24

He didn’t say yesterday. He didn’t say the weekend.

He said this day. Right here. The one you’re in.

Same Route, New View

Let me give you a glimpse into my week.

Yesterday, I did what I always do—I woke up, took a shower, set my morning intention, and drove the same commute to work. Same road, same time. But something small shifted.

I took the freight elevator at work instead of the regular one.

I brought breakfast, but it wasn’t my usual.

And the Tim Tams I’d gifted my boss? She stopped by with a smile and said, “These are really good.” She gave me a cookie and a smile.

Later that day, I had a meaningful conversation with a coworker as I left.

Today? Same coworker. Different conversation—this time about leadership books instead of wine tasting.

See what I mean? It looked like the same routine—but the day itself was full of its own color, texture, and tone.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” — Lamentations 3:22-23

A New Lens for Old Routines

Maybe it’s not the day that’s stale.

Maybe it’s our lens.

As author Marcel Proust once said,

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

What if we stopped waiting for big moments and started noticing the small shifts?

What if we practiced presence the way we practice brushing our teeth—daily and intentionally?

Because sameness is a perspective, not a reality.

Soul Insights

Soul Insights to Break the “Same Old” Spell

1. Your Life is Always in Motion

Even on still days, your spirit moves. Your growth is silent but steady. Don’t underestimate quiet change.

2. You’re More Aware Than You Think

That slight change in a coworker’s mood? The pause you took before reacting? That counts. You’re noticing. You’re evolving.

3. Conversations are Never Recycled

Even with the same person, the moment is new. Different words, different heart postures, different energy.

4. Grace Doesn’t Do Duplicates

God never repeats Himself. He’s an artist, not a manufacturer. What He paints into today has never been seen before.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”Isaiah 43:19

5. You’re the Co-Author of the Day

God may write the chapters, but you help shape the story. Your presence, your response, your attention—it all matters.

Final Thoughts: Wake Up to Your Life

The phrase “same old, same old” might be easy to say, but it’s lazy language.

And we were not created to live lazy lives.

We were made to see, feel, respond, and rejoice—even in the ordinary.

So the next time someone asks, “How’s your day?”

Don’t default. Take a breath.

Reflect for a second.

And maybe say:

• “Different, in a quiet way.”

• “Unexpectedly sweet.”

• “I’m showing up for it.”

Because this day—your one wild and precious life—is not a rerun.

It’s a sacred, unrepeatable, never-again kind of gift.

Want to take this deeper?

Write down three things that were new about your day.

They don’t have to be big. Just real.

Then thank God for the fresh brushstrokes on today’s canvas.

You’re not just surviving life.

You’re writing it.
