What brisket, broadcast glitches, and brokenness taught me about God’s masterpiece in motion.

It started with brisket, baked potatoes, and a side of mac and cheese—but what filled me most wasn’t the food. It was the moment I found myself in a room full of laughter, stories, and sacred fragments of people’s lives.

Somewhere between conversations about TV production and testimonies from Friday night, I found myself blurting out a metaphor I had tucked into a blog post just the day before:

“We’re like a mosaic—each of us a broken piece, but when placed together by God’s hand, we create something breathtaking.”

The room paused. Heads nodded. Smiles formed. And I realized—this wasn’t just poetic. It was present. It was happening right there at the table.

The Art of Being Pieced Together

I’ve always been drawn to mosaics and kaleidoscopes—because they don’t hide the imperfections. They use them. The very things that look cracked and chaotic become the raw material for beauty.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

— Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

We aren’t meant to be polished tiles lined up in neat rows. We’re meant to be placed by the Master Artist, color against contrast, jagged edge against empty space, until the picture becomes clear.

“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

— Leonard Cohen

And here’s the wild part—He uses our worst days and best days alike. Even livestream glitches. Even the moments when you’re silently praying your jeans aren’t stained while listening to someone talk about set design.

(Yes, that actually happened today.)

Three Conversations, One Truth

Over barbecue and angel food cake, I sat with people carrying whole worlds inside them. The minister had invited our tech team over for lunch as a gesture of gratitude—because we’re usually the first ones in on Sunday mornings and the last ones to leave after service ends. It wasn’t just a meal. It was a quiet honoring of behind-the-scenes service.

There were beautiful conversations at that table. Olivia, who works in TV production, shared how storytelling comes to life through set design. Marshall, a minister’s kid, talked about when it’s okay for pastors to share stories from family life.

And then there was me—offering a metaphor I never expected to say aloud.

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

— Psalm 133:1

Sometimes God speaks not from pulpits, but from kitchen chairs and shared laughter.

Soul Insights

1. Your fragment is needed.

Even if you feel small or unseen, your presence completes the picture. Without you, something essential is missing.

2. Broken doesn’t mean useless.

In God’s hands, flaws are not liabilities—they’re invitations to grace.

3. Community is the canvas.

The masterpiece isn’t made alone. It’s created in connection, where stories bump up against each other and healing sneaks in sideways.

4. Art is rarely tidy.

The process is messy. Life leaks. Cameras glitch. But beauty still rises from the mess.

5. Every life holds color.

No matter how dark or dull your current season feels, God can bring out vibrancy where you least expect it.

“We are all broken, that’s how the light gets in.”

— Ernest Hemingway (paraphrased)

“The body is not made up of one part but of many… If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

— 1 Corinthians 12:14, 26

Final Thoughts: Grace in the Gathering

I almost didn’t linger after church. My body was tired. My jeans were a liability. But something told me to stay—and I’m so glad I did.

Because God wasn’t just present in the sermon. He was in the side conversations. The laughter. The layered voices and varying lives. The quiet agreement when someone said, “Yeah. That metaphor hit home.”

So if you’re feeling like a cracked piece or a strange color that doesn’t quite fit—remember: you do.

You’re not a leftover. You’re part of the masterpiece.

Keep showing up. Keep connecting. Let God place you with care.
