Waking Up to Gratitude
You wake up, stretch, and take a deep breath. Some days, gratitude comes naturally—the coffee is perfect, the sun is shining, and life feels good. Other days? You wake up to stress, bad news, or a never-ending to-do list, and gratitude feels… out of reach.
I get it. I’ve had plenty of mornings where stress tried to steal my focus before I even had time to pray. But something shifted when I started treating gratitude as a daily habit rather than just an emotion.
Scripture reminds us:
“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!” — 1 Chronicles 16:34 (AMPC)
Gratitude isn’t just about acknowledging the good moments—it’s about recognizing God’s goodness through it all. And when we do? It changes everything.
Why Gratitude Matters More Than You Think
1. Gratitude is an Act of Faith
Thanking God when life is going well? That’s easy. Thanking Him when life is uncertain, stressful, or downright hard? That’s faith.
Faith isn’t just believing in God—it’s trusting that He is good even when circumstances aren’t. It’s thanking Him in advance for the things we cannot yet see.
“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24 (NIV)
I remember when I moved to Los Angeles with no connections, no clear plan, and only faith guiding me. It would’ve been easy to panic, to focus on the uncertainty. But instead, I chose to thank God ahead of time—for the friendships I hadn’t made yet, the opportunities I couldn’t see, and the provision I trusted was coming. Looking back, I now see how each prayer of gratitude prepared my heart for what God was about to do.
Gratitude in those moments wasn’t about ignoring my struggles; it was about shifting my focus to what God was already doing.
2. Gratitude Shifts Your Perspective
When we focus on what’s lacking, we magnify our problems. But when we focus on gratitude, we magnify God. And that shift changes everything.
A while back, I was struggling with impatience—waiting for certain prayers to be answered. The waiting felt frustrating. But then I started keeping a gratitude journal, writing down even the smallest blessings each day. The funny thing? My circumstances didn’t instantly change—but my attitude did. And suddenly, I was able to see that even in the waiting, God was working.
“It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” — David Steindl-Rast
Gratitude is a choice. And when you choose it, you train your heart to recognize the goodness of God, even in uncertainty.
3. Gratitude Opens the Door for More Blessings
Ever noticed how people who are truly grateful seem to attract more good things? That’s not a coincidence. Gratitude is like a magnet for God’s favor.
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.” — Melody Beattie
I’ve found that when I start my day with “Thank You, God” instead of “What if?” or “Why me?” I begin to notice His hand in ways I hadn’t before. Blessings that might have gone unnoticed suddenly become obvious.
Why? Because gratitude doesn’t change God—it changes us. It prepares our hearts to receive more of what He already desires to give us.
Self-Assessment Questions: How’s Your Gratitude Level?
If you’re wondering where you stand in cultivating a heart of gratitude, take a moment to reflect on these questions:
1. Think back to a recent prayer request. Have you thanked God for what He’s already done, or are you only focused on what you’re still waiting for?
• Gratitude starts with recognizing past and present blessings, not just waiting for future ones.
2. When challenges arise, do you complain first or look for something to be grateful for?
• Shifting your mindset to gratitude—even in difficult situations—builds resilience and trust in God.
3. How often do you express gratitude to others?
• A grateful heart spills over into relationships. When we appreciate others, we build stronger connections and reflect God’s love.
Take a moment to reflect on these questions. If you’re feeling challenged, don’t worry—gratitude is a habit that grows with practice.
Final Thoughts: The Power of Daily Gratitude
Gratitude isn’t about ignoring hardships—it’s about anchoring your heart in God’s goodness, no matter what.
When we wake up each day and say, “God, thank You for this day. Thank You for what You’ve done, what You’re doing, and what You will do,” we position ourselves to live with joy, peace, and expectancy.
Want to Take This Deeper? Try This:
• Start a gratitude journal: Each morning, write down three things you’re grateful for.
• Speak gratitude over your life: Say out loud, “God, thank You for Your goodness today.”
• Express it to others: Send a text or call someone and tell them why you appreciate them.
This week, I challenge you: Before you pick up your phone or start your to-do list each morning, take 60 seconds to name three things you’re grateful for. It doesn’t have to be big—sometimes, the smallest blessings bring the most joy. Try it and see how it shifts your mindset!
Because when we make gratitude a daily habit, we unlock God’s blessings, shift our perspective, and experience more joy than we ever imagined.
