The Strength in Staying Silent

Have you ever felt like God was silent? Like you’ve been praying, waiting, and marching around your “wall,” but nothing is happening?

The Israelites knew that feeling well. They walked in silence for six days—no progress, no cracks in the walls. Just the sound of their own footsteps. But on the seventh day, everything changed.

When Joshua led them to Jericho, God gave them unusual instructions:

“Do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout.” (Joshua 6:10, NLT).

Imagine walking around your biggest struggle—day after day—without voicing frustration, doubt, or fear. No complaining. No negativity. Just silence, trust, and obedience.

That’s the kind of faith God calls us to. And that’s the kind of faith I’m learning to have right now.

Learning to Be Still in Uncertainty

Right now, at my workplace, everything is shifting. Uncertainty is high, anxiety is in the air, and people around me are worried about what’s next. I could easily join the noise, add to the fear, and vent my own concerns. But instead, I’ve chosen to be still.

Why? Because I’ve seen God work things out too many times before to doubt Him now.

Romans 8:28 reminds me:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

This verse isn’t just something I read—it’s something I live by. Every time I’ve faced uncertainty, God has shown me that He is working behind the scenes. So rather than speaking fear into the situation, I hold onto His promises and choose to bring peace instead of panic.

For me, being still means turning off the noise—spending quiet moments in prayer, choosing not to voice my doubts, and reminding myself that God is in control. It’s not easy, but I’ve learned that the less I speak in fear, the more room I give God to move.

When God Seems Silent

I know what it’s like to feel like God isn’t answering.

Years ago, I was searching for a job. I had applied, gone through the process, and was told my application was being reviewed. But then—silence.

Months passed, and I heard nothing. I started to believe they had forgotten about me. I was ready to move on, even considering teaching English overseas. But just when I was about to give up, the company called. Everything had cleared, and I could start in two weeks.

I had no idea that while I was waiting in silence, God was working in the background.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…” (Psalm 37:7, NIV).

God’s timing isn’t ours, but His timing is always perfect.

Encouragement for Those Struggling to Trust

If you’re in a season where you feel like God isn’t listening—if your walls still haven’t fallen—here’s what I wish I knew then:

Silence doesn’t mean God has forgotten you. Just because you don’t see movement doesn’t mean He isn’t working.

God’s timing is always better than ours. We expect things to happen quickly, but God’s plans unfold in ways we don’t always understand.

God delivers in ways we don’t expect. The answer may not come the way you imagined, but it will come.

Hold onto faith, even when it’s hard. It’s easy to talk about trusting God, but practicing it is tough. Keep believing.

Stay silent when doubt creeps in. Speaking fear and negativity reinforces them. Instead, choose to stay still and let God do the talking.

Soul Insights

1. Silence makes room for faith. When we stop filling the space with our worries and doubts, we create room for trust to grow.

2. Stillness allows us to hear God more clearly. Elijah didn’t hear God in the wind, earthquake, or fire—but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-13). When we are still, we can better discern His voice.

3. Waiting is a test of obedience. The Israelites had to march in silence for six days before the walls fell. Sometimes, our silence is a sign of trust, not weakness.

4. God’s delays are not His denials. Just because you don’t see progress doesn’t mean God isn’t moving. His answer might be on the way.

5. Trusting God means surrendering control. We want to see results, but faith means trusting before we see.

Final Thoughts: Trusting God Even When You Don’t Understand

I’ve learned that having faith isn’t about understanding everything—it’s about trusting even when you don’t.

Joshua and the Israelites didn’t understand why they had to march in silence, but they obeyed. And on the seventh day, when the time was right, they shouted, and the walls came down.

Whatever you’re facing today, trust that your seventh day is coming.

Surely, God is working behind the scenes.

Surely, He hasn’t forgotten you.

Surely, the walls will fall in His perfect timing.

A Challenge for You

This week, practice being still.

• When you feel the urge to vent, stop and pray instead.

• When fear creeps in, declare Romans 8:28 over your life.

• Write down one thing you’re trusting God for and add “Surely, God will provide.” Let that be your declaration of faith.

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” — Joyce Meyer

Stay still. Stay silent. Keep marching. And when the time is right, your breakthrough will come.
