The Illusion of Control
We love the idea of control. We plan, strategize, and do everything in our power to steer our lives in the direction we think is best. But what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan? When unexpected detours shake our confidence? When the road ahead is unclear, and we feel lost?
I’ve realized that life isn’t about me being the driver—it’s about me trusting the One who holds the map. There’s a peace that comes with surrender, but learning to truly let go is a process. For much of my life, I’ve tried to grab the wheel, believing that my plans were better, that my understanding was enough. But each time I’ve done so, I’ve only ended up exhausted, anxious, and uncertain.
When I look back, I see God’s hand guiding me even when I didn’t recognize it. One of the clearest examples of this is my own adoption. I was placed into a family that wasn’t biologically mine, yet I never felt different or out of place. I was loved, nurtured, and given opportunities that shaped the person I am today. It wasn’t until I discovered I was adopted that I truly understood: God had been looking out for me since the very beginning. Even when I was completely helpless, He had a plan.
And He has a plan for you, too.
The Struggle to Trust: Why Letting Go Feels So Hard
Even knowing God’s faithfulness, there are still moments where I struggle. There are times when life feels overwhelming—when uncertainty creeps in, when I question if things will work out. It’s in those moments that I feel the temptation to take control, to force outcomes, to grab the wheel instead of letting God drive.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” — Proverbs 19:21
I may have my own plans, but God’s purpose always prevails. He sees what I can’t. He knows the full picture when I only see a single moment in time. And when I truly embrace that truth, I experience freedom instead of fear, peace instead of pressure.
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
If I want to live by faith, I have to be willing to walk forward without seeing the full staircase, trusting that each step is leading me exactly where I need to be.
The Passenger Seat Perspective: Learning to Enjoy the Ride
There’s something liberating about choosing to be the passenger instead of the driver. As a driver, every decision rests on your shoulders—when to turn, where to go, how to navigate roadblocks. But as the passenger, you get to trust the expert at the wheel. You get to enjoy the view, embrace the journey, and appreciate the ride.
Of course, there are moments when the road looks rough, when detours arise, when it feels like you’re heading in the wrong direction. But that’s when faith steps in. That’s when trust becomes real.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6
God doesn’t promise a smooth road, but He promises a purposeful one. His paths are always straight, even when they feel winding to us.
Here’s how I remind myself to stay in the passenger seat:
• When I feel anxious, I pray.
• When I start doubting, I recall past moments of God’s faithfulness.
• When I feel the urge to control, I surrender it back to God.
The more I practice this, the more I realize that God has never let me down. Not once.

1. God’s Perspective is Bigger Than Ours
I can only see this moment, this situation, but God sees the entire journey. What feels like a setback may actually be a setup for something greater.
🔹 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.” — Isaiah 55:8
2. Fear is the Enemy of Trust
Every time I let fear control me, I take my trust away from God. Faith and fear cannot exist in the same space—one always overpowers the other.
🔹 “Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear.” — Corrie Ten Boom
3. Surrender is an Active Choice
Letting go isn’t passive—it’s an intentional, daily decision. Trusting God doesn’t mean sitting back and doing nothing, but rather walking in obedience and faith, even when the outcome is unclear.
4. Gratitude Strengthens Trust
The more I focus on what God has already done, the easier it becomes to trust Him for what’s ahead. Gratitude shifts my perspective from what I lack to what I have.
5. God’s Timing is Perfect, Even When It Feels Late
I’ve learned that God is never in a hurry, but He is never late. His timing is designed for my growth, my preparation, and my ultimate good.

Final Thoughts: The Gift of Surrender
At the end of the day, trusting God isn’t about understanding every detail—it’s about knowing that He does. It’s surrendering control not out of weakness, but out of faith in His strength.
If you’ve been feeling the weight of uncertainty, if you’ve been holding on too tightly to control, I encourage you to take a deep breath and release it. Let go. Trust the Driver.
Because here’s the truth: He sees the whole road ahead, and He will get you exactly where you’re meant to be.
