Lessons Learned in the Waiting

Waiting is one of life’s most challenging tests. It can feel like driving through fog, unable to see what lies ahead, or standing in a quiet room, straining to hear the faintest whisper of hope. We’ve all been there—praying for a breakthrough, longing for stability, yearning for an answer. But what if the waiting itself is part of God’s plan? What if the silence isn’t God ignoring you, but Him preparing you?

During a particularly challenging season of my life, I learned that waiting isn’t wasted. God works in ways we can’t see, often behind the scenes, refining us while preparing to answer our prayers. His timing is never late, and through the waiting, we discover that His plans are far greater than anything we could imagine.

A Story of Waiting

Several years ago, I moved back to Los Angeles after living in San Jose for four years. I returned to deal with the grief of losing my mom and to attend a grief recovery class offered by a local church. While I sought emotional healing, I was also searching for financial stability, applying to jobs and hoping for a breakthrough. I stayed with friends, couch-surfing rent-free, and relied on unemployment benefits that were quickly running out.

Months passed without much progress. I applied for countless jobs, including one with a government agency in November. In January, they called back, giving me a glimmer of hope. But they told me the hiring process would be lengthy. Weeks turned into months as I waited for updates, growing more desperate as my financial situation worsened. By summer, I was tempted to give up.

There are no deadlines against which He must work.” I wanted everything to happen immediately, but God was teaching me patience. It was a lesson in trust, a reminder that He was at work, even when I couldn’t see it.

Despite my doubts, I prayed constantly, clinging to God’s promises. Then, in July, when I least expected it, they called to offer me the job. It was conditional, but it was the answer to my prayers. I was overwhelmed with gratitude, realizing that God had been orchestrating everything behind the scenes. The waiting was not wasted—it was a season of refinement that deepened my faith and trust in God’s perfect timing.

1. God Works Behind the Scenes

Even when we can’t see it, God is orchestrating things for our good. Like a masterful artist, He carefully places every brushstroke, even when the painting is incomplete. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This experience taught me that God’s delays are not denials—they are preparations.

2. Patience Is Refined in the Process

Waiting isn’t just about the destination; it’s about who we become along the way. During that season, I learned that patience is not simply the ability to wait—it’s about how we behave while we’re waiting. As Joyce Meyer wisely put it, “Patience is not simply the ability to wait—it’s how we behave while we’re waiting.” I realized that waiting shapes us, teaching us to trust God’s timing and to relinquish control over the process.

3. Hope Anchors the Soul

When the waiting feels endless, hope is what keeps us anchored. Even when circumstances seemed bleak, God would send small reminders of His faithfulness—updates on my application, encouragement from friends, or moments of peace during prayer. Hope doesn’t erase the struggle, but it strengthens us to endure. C.S. Lewis captured this well when he wrote, “I am sure that God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait.” This became my mantra, a reminder that the waiting was part of God’s good plan for me.

4. Gratitude Reframes Perspective

One of the greatest lessons I learned was to find gratitude in the little things—supportive friends, opportunities to grow, and moments of grace. Gratitude shifted my focus from what I lacked to what I already had, filling my heart with joy even in uncertainty. Reflecting on the process, I realized that God’s plans are infinitely better than my own. “He has made everything beautiful in its time,” Ecclesiastes 3:11 declares. Trusting His timing brings peace, even when the waiting is hard.

Waiting isn’t easy, and I’d be the first to admit I still struggle with it.
