Trusting God When the Path is Unclear
Have you ever felt like life was throwing you into the unknown, forcing you to keep moving forward without a clear path? Last night, I had a vivid and unsettling dream—a nightmare, really—that gave me a new perspective on navigating fear and uncertainty.
In the dream, I found myself surrounded by people, all trying to escape zombies. The atmosphere was tense, and fear clung to every corner of the scene. At first, I hid with others under a bed, but I didn’t feel safe. I kept searching for security, moving from room to room, until I found myself driving through dark, zombie-filled streets.
I wasn’t sure where I was headed, but one thing was clear—I couldn’t stop moving forward. Even though I was scared and the path was hidden, something in me knew I had to keep driving.
When I woke up, I realized this dream wasn’t just about zombies. It mirrored the fears and uncertainties I’ve been processing in my waking life: navigating big goals like career advancement, writing success, and finding a life partner. The darkness in the dream represented my questions about the future, and the zombies reflected the fears and challenges chasing me. Yet, the act of driving symbolized something deeper—a determination to keep moving forward, even when the path isn’t clear.
The Zombies in Our Lives
We all have “zombies” in life—those relentless fears, doubts, or pressures that seem to pursue us no matter where we turn. For me, one of those fears is the thought of being on my own. While I know God is my ultimate fortress, I sometimes wonder, Who will help me when I fall?
This fear drives me to lean on God more fully. It reminds me that, even when I feel uncertain, I have His promises to rely on. In Matthew 6:34, Jesus tells us:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
This verse is a lifeline for me, especially during moments when I feel overwhelmed. It reminds me that God’s care is sufficient for today, and I don’t need to carry the weight of tomorrow alone.
Moving Forward in Faith
In the dream, I kept driving despite the fear because staying still wasn’t an option. I was searching for safety, and in life, I find that I’m doing the same thing. I’m moving forward in faith, trusting God to guide me through the unknown.
One quote I often reflect on is this:
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
That step of faith doesn’t remove the darkness, but it does bring light to the next moment. It reminds me that God doesn’t require me to have everything figured out—He just asks me to trust Him enough to keep moving.
Proverbs 3:5-6 has been another source of encouragement:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
This verse challenges me to surrender my need for control and let God lead me. Even when I can’t see the path, I trust that He’s already paved the way.
Soul Insights
1. Fear Pushes Us Toward God:
Fear is uncomfortable, but it can also remind us of our dependence on God. When we feel overwhelmed, it’s an invitation to pray, trust, and let Him carry the weight.
2. The Unknown Requires Faith:
Just like driving in the dark, moving forward in life without knowing the future requires faith. It’s a reminder that God sees the whole picture, even when we don’t.
3. God is Our Fortress:
In moments of fear or vulnerability, God’s promises provide a refuge. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
4. Progress Over Perfection:
The act of moving forward—however small the steps—matters more than having everything figured out. Trusting God with each step is a form of worship.
5. Hope Lights the Way:
Hope isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about believing that God’s goodness will prevail. Hope anchors us when the road feels uncertain.
Encouragement for the Journey
If you’re feeling uncertain about the future, I want to remind you of this truth: God is in control. You may not know where the road leads, but He does. Keep driving forward, even if the path is unclear, trusting that He’s guiding you.
Another quote that inspires me is this:
“When you can’t see God’s hand, trust His heart.” – Charles Spurgeon
Whether your “zombies” are fear, doubt, or overwhelming challenges, remember that God’s promises are bigger. Pray, give your worries to Him, and let His peace guard your heart.
Final Thoughts
Driving through darkness, both in my dream and in life, has taught me this: uncertainty isn’t the enemy—it’s an opportunity to grow closer to God. Faith doesn’t eliminate fear, but it gives us the courage to keep moving forward.
So, when life feels overwhelming or the road ahead seems invisible, take comfort in this: God is already there. He’s paving the way, providing strength for today, and holding your tomorrows.
What are the “zombies” in your life? What fears or uncertainties are you facing? I encourage you to bring them to God and trust Him to guide you through the unknown. Let Him be your light in the darkness and your fortress when fear creeps in.
