Touching Lives
Have you ever stopped to think about how far the ripples of your decisions reach? Even small actions—kind or careless—can shape the lives of others in ways we might never see. On January 24, 2025, I was reminded of this truth in a powerful way.
A single decision made at the highest level of leadership trickled down, disrupting countless lives. It wasn’t until I stood in my manager’s office and listened to the effects of a hiring freeze that I realized how deeply connected we all are.
What began as a high-level executive order ended with displaced workers, halted recruitment efforts, and shattered plans. I couldn’t help but wonder: was this decision made thoughtfully? Did those in power consider the lives they were affecting? This experience left me with a deeper understanding of the importance of mindful decisions—whether in leadership or in our daily lives.
The Disconnect: How Leadership Ripples Outward
It started with a simple conversation in my manager’s office. I was suggesting that we hold a branch meeting to regroup after the fires in Los Angeles had paused operations for nearly two weeks. Midway through our discussion, my manager dropped the news: a federal hiring freeze had been implemented.
At first, I didn’t grasp the magnitude of this decision. But as the details unfolded, the weight of it became clear. Recruitment programs had been halted indefinitely, leaving recruiters without their primary roles. Community outreach programs—designed to serve and connect—were suddenly put on hold. Conditional job offers were rescinded, leaving hopeful candidates in limbo, some of whom had already made plans to relocate or start new chapters. Entire offices were shut down, and employees were being reassigned without certainty about their futures.
I was shocked. As I stood there processing this news, one thought echoed in my mind: How could this decision have been made without considering its human impact? The disconnect between the macro-level decision and the micro-level reality was glaring. It felt careless, as though the individuals impacted were invisible in the decision-making process.
Leadership, I realized, has a responsibility not just to make decisions but to account for their ripple effects. As Philippians 2:4 reminds us, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Thoughtful leadership requires empathy, accountability, and a willingness to truly see the people behind the policies.
The Ripple Effect: Lessons for Everyday Life
This realization isn’t just about leadership—it’s about all of us. Each of us, in our own ways, creates ripples through our actions and decisions. Whether we’re aware of it or not, our choices leave marks on the lives of others.
Here are three lessons I’ve learned about the ripple effect:
1. Give Careful Thought to Your Ways:
Haggai 1:5 says, “Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: Give careful thought to your ways.” Before making decisions, pause to consider their potential impact. What consequences—good or bad—might ripple out from this choice? Reflecting on your actions can prevent unnecessary harm and cultivate intentionality.
2. Consider Others Before Acting:
Selfishness often leads to unintended harm. When we prioritize our own desires without considering how our actions affect others, we risk leaving destruction in our wake. Imagine yourself in another’s shoes before acting. How would you feel if the roles were reversed?
3. Legacy Through Intentionality:
Every decision contributes to the legacy we leave behind. As C.S. Lewis once said, “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” Ask yourself: What kind of impact do I want to leave behind? A legacy of care and kindness begins with intentional decisions made today.
Guided by Faith: Making Thoughtful Decisions
For me, faith is the anchor that keeps me grounded in decision-making. When faced with uncertainty or tough choices, I turn to scripture, prayer, and wise counsel. As Proverbs 15:22 reminds us: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
I try to approach every decision by reflecting on its potential impact and seeking God’s wisdom. Staying rooted in faith helps me take the high road, even when it’s not the easiest path. I’ve learned to ask: How will this choice ripple outward? By focusing on what’s good, right, and kind, I can leave ripples of positivity rather than harm.
Soul Insights
Here are five insights I’ve gained from reflecting on the ripple effect:
1. Every Decision is an Opportunity for Impact:
Even small choices—like how you treat a coworker or respond in a moment of stress—create ripples. Choose kindness and compassion to leave a positive mark.
2. Intentions Shape Outcomes:
The heart behind your actions matters. Decisions made with pure intentions often yield better results than those rooted in selfishness or haste.
3. Empathy is Essential:
Seeing the world from another’s perspective changes how you approach decisions. Empathy softens hearts and strengthens connections.
4. Accountability Builds Trust:
Good leaders—and good individuals—take responsibility for the effects of their actions. Accountability fosters respect and inspires others to do the same.
5. Faith Brings Clarity:
When decisions feel overwhelming, faith can provide the clarity and strength needed to act with wisdom. Trust in God’s guidance and let His Word light your path (Psalm 119:105).
Final Thoughts: What Ripples Will You Create?
Whether you’re a leader making big decisions or someone navigating everyday life, your actions have power. Like stones tossed into a pond, the ripples of your choices spread outward, touching lives in ways you may never see.
As Galatians 6:9 reminds us: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Let’s be intentional about creating ripples of kindness, care, and faith.
Today, I challenge you to reflect: What kind of ripple will you create? How will your choices shape the lives of those around you? Let’s choose to leave a legacy of love and thoughtfulness—one decision at a time.
