A Lesson in Savoring
Life can often feel like a race, rushing from one task to the next, rarely pausing to appreciate the beauty in the present moment. But sometimes, an experience comes along that reminds us to slow down, pay attention, and truly savor. For me, that moment came during a wine class featuring Spanish and Portuguese wines.
I didn’t just learn about wine that night—I discovered lessons about savoring life itself. As Ecclesiastes 3:13 reminds us, “That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.” This simple act of tasting and reflecting became a powerful reminder to appreciate the richness of life, one moment (or sip) at a time.
The Experience: More Than a Classroom
The setup of the wine class was welcoming and structured like a classroom. At the front, a screen displayed maps and visuals of Spain and Portugal. The instructor walked us through the diverse wine regions of these countries, teaching us about the types of grapes grown there and the unique wines they produce.
I learned that Spain’s and Portugal’s sparkling wines are called Cava, a bubbly delight that’s perfect for celebrations. But the highlight of the evening came with the last wine we tasted: a Quinta das Carvalhas Douro Tinto from Portugal.
This red wine stood out to me for its elegance and complexity. With flavors of plum, cherry, and spice, it had a medium-bodied richness that lingered beautifully. The wine came from the Douro region of Portugal, a place renowned for its robust blends. This particular bottle featured a varietal blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, and its medium-to-deep ruby color was stunning in the glass. As I sipped, I could easily imagine pairing it with a prime rib or a savory mushroom risotto.
It struck me that this wasn’t just about wine—it was about connection. Learning about the regions, the grapes, and the traditions behind these wines made me feel deeply connected to their origins. And in a way, it reminded me that life is much the same. Behind every moment is a story, waiting to be uncovered.
The Parallels: Life as a Glass of Wine
As the evening unfolded, I couldn’t help but see how wine mirrors life. Each glass held unique flavors and complexities, much like the moments we encounter every day.
1. Patience Reveals the Best Flavors
Good wine takes time to mature, and so do we. The Douro Tinto I enjoyed was a testament to this, with its bold, developed flavors that could only come from careful aging. Life’s best moments often require patience. As Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
2. Every Taste is Unique
Not all wines—or moments—are the same. Some are sweet and comforting; others are bold and challenging. Just as each wine has its own character, every season of life shapes us in different ways.
3. Savoring Takes Practice
Tasting wine is an intentional act. You pause to notice the color, swirl the glass to release aromas, and take small sips to fully appreciate its layers. Living intentionally takes the same effort. Slowing down, reflecting, and appreciating the present moment are habits worth cultivating.
4. Surprises Add Depth
One wine I tasted had unexpected smoky undertones that caught me off guard—in the best way. Life often works the same way. These surprises, even the challenging ones, add richness to our journey.
5. Simplicity Can Be Profound
Cava, with its refreshing effervescence, reminded me that even the simplest joys—like laughter, a sunset, or a quiet moment of prayer—can leave a lasting impression.
Soul Insights
1. Pause and Notice the Details
Life is richer when we take the time to notice the small things. Whether it’s the subtle flavors of a wine or the beauty of a single moment, pausing allows us to fully experience what’s in front of us.
2. Embrace Complexity
The complexity of a wine mirrors the complexity of life. Instead of shying away from challenges or differences, embrace them as part of the story God is writing for you.
3. Let Time Do Its Work
Aging brings out the best in wine, and it’s the same with us. Trust God’s timing and allow the seasons of waiting to refine you.
4. Celebrate Each Moment
Even the ordinary moments hold extraordinary beauty when we take the time to savor them. Celebrate the diversity of experiences in your life, just as you would celebrate the variety of flavors in a glass of wine.
5. Find Joy in the Journey
Life isn’t just about the destination—it’s about the process. The joy comes from tasting, learning, and growing along the way.
Final Thoughts: A Life Worth Savoring
That evening, I learned much more than just the characteristics of Spanish and Portuguese wines. I learned that life, much like wine, is meant to be savored. Behind every moment is a unique story waiting to unfold—if we take the time to slow down and notice.
Rumi once wrote, “Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.” In savoring life, we let go of the unnecessary burdens and focus on what matters most. And as Jesus reminds us in John 15:11, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
So, the next time you’re rushing through life, take a moment to pause and truly savor it. Whether it’s a challenging season, a sweet joy, or a quiet moment of reflection, embrace the richness it offers.
What moments in your life have you paused to savor? How do you find joy in the subtle, unexpected moments of your day?
Here’s to savoring life—sip by sip, step by step, and grace by grace.
