Rest, Responsibility, and Faith in the Everyday

Some mornings begin with an inner tug-of-war. As my alarm blared at 5 a.m., I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, debating whether I should call in sick or push through a full day of work. I wasn’t completely well—90% maybe—but enough to manage, right?

Moments like these remind me of how hard it can be to balance responsibility with self-care. I wrestled with thoughts of guilt (“You have so much to do at work!”) and self-compassion (“But you need rest to fully recover”). After some prayer and reflection, I decided to show up and trust God to carry me through.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

What unfolded that day taught me lessons about productivity, connection, and the sacredness of rest.

A Day of Doing, Encouraging, and Learning

Once I got to work, the busyness began. Between emails, reports, and the long-overdue task of assembling binders for a supervisor, I was deep in the hustle. The binders had been on my to-do list for weeks, delayed by the holiday craziness and my own bout of illness. I didn’t finish them entirely—they still need labels—but making progress felt like a small victory.

Amidst the tasks, I had two meaningful conversations that reminded me why connection matters. First, I spoke with a guy friend, who’s applying for a job at my workplace. He was nervous but excited, and we spent 30 minutes going over his questions about the role. As I answered him, I felt a surge of hope for his future. I’m praying he gets the job and that this step leads him to where God wants him to be.

Later, I spoke with another friend, who shared her feelings of disconnection. Her words brought me back to my own experience of moving from Hawaii to Seattle years ago. I remembered feeling out of sorts, isolated, and unsure of my place. I told her how I learned to take initiative to cultivate relationships, but most importantly, I leaned on my relationship with God to anchor me. Sharing my story felt like offering her a lifeline, and I could sense her spirits lifting by the end of our conversation.

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” – Proverbs 11:25

Balancing Productivity, Connection, and Rest

By the end of the day, I felt drained but also fulfilled. A friend invited me to go for a walk, but I chose to stay home and rest. In the past, I might have felt guilty about declining, but today, I saw it as an act of self-care. Rest isn’t just physical recovery—it’s a spiritual reset. Sitting by the heater with my dinner and a favorite show, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for God’s provision throughout the day.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” – Colossians 3:23

Soul Insights

1. The Power of Showing Up, Even When It’s Hard

• Getting out of bed today was a small act of courage, but it reminded me that showing up is sometimes half the battle. God doesn’t expect perfection—just a willing heart.

2. Connection Takes Intentionality

• Conversations with my friends reminded me that meaningful relationships require effort. Listening, sharing, and encouraging others not only bless them but also refresh our own spirits.

3. Rest is Sacred, Not Selfish

• Choosing to rest instead of taking a walk wasn’t laziness; it was honoring the body God has given me. Rest is a gift that renews our energy and strengthens our faith.

4. Progress Over Perfection

• I didn’t finish every task today, but progress is still a win. Productivity is about doing what you can with the time you have and trusting God with the rest.

5. God Works Through Small Acts of Love

• Whether it was helping my guy friend, comforting another friend, or delivering birthday cards, I saw how even small acts can ripple outward. These moments matter more than we realize.

Final Thoughts: Reflecting and Moving Forward

As I reflect on the day, I’m struck by how much grace God weaves into our ordinary lives. From the strength to tackle unfinished work to the chance to lift up others in their struggles, His presence was clear.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to finish those binders on Monday and see what opportunities God has in store for my guy friend. I’m praying for my other friend to feel more connected in her journey and for myself to continue learning how to balance productivity with rest and relationships.

Every day offers a chance to grow, connect, and serve. So I leave you with this question: How can you create balance in your own life today? What small step can you take toward rest, connection, or faith?
