When Life Forces You to Slow Down
One morning, I woke up feeling far from my best. My throat hurt, my body ached, and I was so congested that breathing felt like a chore. All I wanted was to stay in bed, call in sick, and let the day pass me by. But life doesn’t always offer that luxury, and I had a 9:30 meeting I couldn’t miss. So, I pushed through, smiled when I could, and made plans to return home and recover as soon as I could.
Sometimes, though, life has a way of teaching us lessons when we least expect it. What started as a day of frustration and exhaustion turned into a quiet reflection on patience, rest, and finding joy in unexpected places.
The Rhythm of a Day Unfolding
As I sat in my meeting—a file review, more routine than engaging—I found myself grateful for a small silver lining. I had brought a book about mindfulness, and while the work unfolded in front of me, I immersed myself in its pages. One idea stuck with me: “Smile, breathe, and go slowly.” That simple instruction felt like a lifeline in the middle of a hectic, overwhelming day.
It reminded me of how often I operate on autopilot, my mind racing ahead while my body mechanically goes through the motions. It was as if the book was calling me to pause and pay attention to the moment I was in. The scripture, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), echoed in my mind. Stillness isn’t just an action; it’s a mindset, a way of being present even when the world around you feels chaotic.
Coming Home to Rest
By noon, I knew I had reached my limit. My body was crying out for rest, and I finally listened. On my way out, a coworker commented on the mask I was wearing and thanked me for being considerate. Even in my discomfort, I found a small moment of connection and kindness.
Once home, the relief was palpable. Home felt like a cocoon, a safe haven where I could let go of the expectations I had placed on myself. Still, part of me wrestled with guilt. There was so much I had planned for the day—errands, chores, and even some fun in Japan Town. But as I warmed up leftovers and settled in front of the TV, I realized that rest wasn’t a luxury I could deny myself.
In that moment, the words of Isaiah 40:29 came to mind: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Strength, I realized, sometimes comes in the form of permission—to stop, to breathe, and to heal.
Finding Joy in the Unexpected
The afternoon was slow but comforting. I finished a K-drama series, losing myself in the story’s twists and turns, and later turned on an astronomy documentary about exoplanets. It was fascinating to learn about planets that scientists describe as resembling “hell”—some with surfaces of molten lava, others with storms of glass shards.
As I dozed off toward the end of the documentary, I couldn’t help but smile. Even in my exhaustion, I found myself in awe of the universe. The small things—a warm meal, a good show, and a glimpse into the cosmos—had become pockets of joy in an otherwise quiet day. As Emily Dickinson once wrote, “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.”
Soul Insights
1. Presence Brings Peace
Reading about mindfulness during my meeting reminded me of the power of being present. Instead of letting my mind wander or stressing over my condition, I focused on where I was. It wasn’t perfect, but it brought me a sense of calm. Presence isn’t about erasing the discomfort—it’s about accepting it and finding peace within it.
2. Rest is Sacred
Heading home felt like giving myself permission to care for my body. Rest isn’t indulgent; it’s necessary. Choosing rest isn’t about abandoning responsibilities—it’s about honoring them by making sure you have the strength to show up tomorrow.
3. Gratitude Shifts Everything
Despite my frustration with my congestion, I found myself grateful for small blessings: a home to return to, the ability to enjoy a meal, and even the knowledge that my body was fighting to heal itself. Gratitude doesn’t eliminate the struggle, but it softens its edges.
4. Patience is a Process
I often want quick fixes—instant solutions to problems big and small. But healing, whether physical or emotional, takes time. Today was a reminder to trust the process, to allow things to unfold naturally, and to find strength in the waiting.
5. Joy is in the Small Things
From the comfort of a warm bowl of leftovers to the wonder of learning about distant planets, I was reminded that joy doesn’t need to be grand. Sometimes, it’s simply about noticing what’s already around you.
Final Thoughts: The Beauty of the Pause
Today wasn’t the day I had planned, but it was the day I needed. It was a reminder to slow down, let go of control, and embrace the present moment. The words of Isaiah 40:31 stayed with me: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.” Waiting is hard, but it’s also where renewal happens.
Life has a way of teaching us patience, often in moments when we’d rather be doing something else. But there’s beauty in the pause, in the stillness, and in the quiet realization that even our slowest days are part of a greater rhythm.
As I drifted to sleep, I let go of the day’s frustrations and held onto its quiet lessons. Tomorrow will come, and with it, new opportunities to learn, grow, and—above all—be present.
