The Always Question

What can you say about yourself that’s “always”? Are you always late? Always worried? Always kind? The word always reveals the patterns shaping your life. It challenges us to reflect on the habits we build—whether they lead us toward our purpose or pull us further away from it.

Paul’s encouragement in 1 Corinthians 15:58, to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,” reminds us that what we do matters—not just for today, but for eternity. This truth has been a guiding light in my own life, especially when I’ve faced situations where inconsistency or fear could have easily taken over.

One such moment came when I had to confront a close friend about his sexuality—a subject he had hidden from me, likely out of fear of rejection. I hesitated, unsure how to address such a delicate topic. Yet I knew that ignoring it wasn’t an option. Summoning the courage to face the issue head-on, I had an honest, heartfelt conversation with my friend. Though difficult, that moment taught me the power of boldness and the freedom that comes from addressing challenges directly. The truth truly set me free.

This experience, and many others like it, have shown me the transformative power of consistency—not just in how we show up for others, but in how we honor God through our actions.

The Power of Consistency

Consistency is more than just a habit; it’s a declaration of your values. It’s easy to act on feelings, but feelings are fickle—they shift like the wind. Consistency, on the other hand, anchors us, guiding us toward a life of purpose. As C.S. Lewis wisely said, “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different?”

For me, confronting my friend wasn’t just about that one conversation. It was part of a larger journey to consistently choose courage over avoidance, truth over comfort. Whether it’s addressing difficult topics, showing kindness when it’s hard, or sticking to a commitment even when no one is watching, consistency builds character—and character shapes destiny.

Anchored in God’s Word

Scripture provides the ultimate foundation for consistency. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 15:58 remind us that “nothing you do for the Lord is ever in vain.” Every step of faithfulness, no matter how small, has eternal significance.

This is echoed in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” These verses remind us that perseverance is key. The fruits of our labor may not always be immediate, but God sees our efforts and honors our steadfastness.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” When we focus on being consistent in our faith and actions, we tap into the strength God has already placed within us, enabling us to face any challenge.

Self-Assessment: Are You Always in the Right Place?

To grow in steadfastness, it’s important to assess where we stand:

1. What is one area where inconsistency has held you back from your full potential?

2. What small, consistent actions can you commit to this week that will align you with your purpose and values?

3. What is one fear or challenge you’ve been avoiding that you can courageously confront?

Practical Steps Toward Consistency

1. Start Small: Don’t try to overhaul your life overnight. Focus on one habit—whether it’s reading scripture daily, showing gratitude, or tackling a long-avoided task.

2. Visual Reminders: Post scriptures or affirmations where you can see them, keeping your goals and values front of mind.

3. Celebrate Wins: Acknowledge even the smallest victories to stay motivated and remind yourself of the progress you’re making.

4. Accountability: Share your goals with a trusted friend who can encourage you and hold you accountable.

5. Stay Purpose-Driven: Revisit your “why” when motivation falters. Consistency isn’t about perfection; it’s about faithfulness to your purpose.

A Steadfast Life

Consistency isn’t glamorous—it’s built in the quiet, unseen moments of choosing to do what’s right, even when it’s hard. But the beauty of steadfastness is that it reflects God’s unwavering faithfulness to us. As Galatians 6:9 reminds us, our efforts are never wasted.

Looking back, I see how God has used my own journey of consistency to shape me. From overcoming fear in difficult conversations to building habits of prayer and reflection, these choices have deepened my faith and strengthened my relationships.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase,” Martin Luther King Jr. once said. Consistency is much the same—it’s about trusting God with each step, knowing He is guiding us toward something greater.

Beloved, keep going. Be steadfast in your love, your faith, and your work for the Lord. Nothing you do for Him is ever in vain.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your steadfast love and faithfulness. Help me to remain immovable in my faith and consistent in my actions, even when it’s hard. Give me the courage to face challenges and the perseverance to stay the course. Thank You for reminding me that nothing I do for You is in vain. In Jesus’ name, amen.
