Ascension at Snow Canyon State Park
During my recent road trip to Utah, I had a memorable experience at Snow Canyon State Park that left me feeling proud and deeply reflective. On Thanksgiving Day, I decided to challenge myself by climbing a steep rock face that felt more like a rock climbing expedition than a simple hike. As I stood at the base of the climb, fear bubbled up inside me. The thought of slipping or falling was overwhelming. But alongside that fear came a determination to push past my limits and see the view from the top.
The decision wasn’t easy. Part of me wanted to stay safely on the ground and cheer my friends on instead. But something inside urged me to try. I thought of how often I let fear dictate my choices and decided this time would be different. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13
With each cautious step, I realized the importance of finding a firm foundation, both in the literal sense of secure footholds and in the spiritual sense of trusting in God. Much like life’s challenges, this climb required focus, courage, and persistence. I deliberately chose each handhold, pausing to ensure it would hold my weight before moving forward. The experience reminded me of Martin Luther King Jr.’s words: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Fear continued to creep in, threatening to hold me back. My hands were sweaty, my legs shaky, and the sharp edges of the rocks made the climb all the more intimidating. But as I prayed and concentrated on the present moment, I found myself gaining confidence. Step by step, I moved closer to the summit. Mark Twain’s words came to mind: “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear.” I realized that bravery doesn’t mean being fearless; it means pressing forward despite the fear.
After what felt like an eternity, I reached the top. The view was breathtaking—a reward for the physical and mental effort it took to get there. The sun bathed the canyon in warm hues, and a gentle breeze carried a sense of peace I hadn’t felt in a long time. Bruce Lee’s wisdom echoed in my mind: “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.” The climb was far from easy, but it taught me that with faith and persistence, I could overcome even the most intimidating challenges.
Soul Insights
- Overcoming Fear: Facing fears head-on can lead to personal growth and unexpected rewards. Fear can be a stepping stone to greater things when confronted with courage and faith.
- Faith as a Foundation: Just as I needed solid footing on the rock, I was reminded that faith provides a stable foundation for navigating life’s challenges.
- The Power of Focus: Staying present and focused on each step helped me move forward without being overwhelmed by the climb ahead.
- Persistence Pays Off: Deliberate, steady effort led to accomplishment. This is a reminder that persistence is key to achieving goals.
- The Beauty of Perspective: Reaching the top gave me a greater appreciation for the struggle it took to get there, reinforcing the idea that the journey shapes us as much as the destination.
A Life Lesson Beyond the Climb
This climb was more than just a physical challenge—it was a metaphor for life. As I reflect on the experience, I see parallels to my writing journey, my spiritual walk, and even my relationships. Just as I focused on one step at a time during the climb, I’m reminded to trust God and take life one day at a time, especially when the path seems unclear.
I also thought about how often we let fear hold us back. When was the last time you faced a challenge that seemed insurmountable? How did you push through? When we choose to move forward despite our doubts, we unlock new possibilities and gain a deeper sense of who we are and what we’re capable of.
Final Thoughts
My Thanksgiving at Snow Canyon State Park became a pivotal moment of growth. It wasn’t just about reaching the summit but about the lessons I learned along the way. The climb tested my endurance, spirit, and trust in God. It taught me to embrace challenges, knowing that with faith and persistence, the view from the top is always worth it.
Would you let fear stop you from experiencing life’s breathtaking views? What step of faith will you take today to conquer your own “mountain”?
