How Faith Leads Us Forward
I’ve been there. One of the most significant leaps of faith I’ve taken was moving from Oahu to Seattle. Leaving the familiar warmth of Hawaii for the cloudy unknowns of the Pacific Northwest was a decision that shook me. Oahu was home, with its beaches, the comfort of community, and the life I had grown used to. Seattle, on the other hand, felt foreign and full of uncertainty. Would I fit in? Would I make new friends? What if things didn’t work out? I didn’t have the answers, but I felt that nudge—the sense that I had to step out of my comfort zone and trust that everything would fall into place.
Taking That First Step
Faith is the bridge between the “what ifs” and the reality of God’s promises. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” But living out that kind of faith is no small feat. It’s easier to trust when all the pieces are in place. It’s harder when you’re asked to take that first step without knowing where your foot will land.
Consider Noah’s story. Hebrews 11:7 tells us that “By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told.” Imagine being Noah—building an ark because of an impending flood no one else could see. It sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Yet Noah obeyed God’s call without a full understanding of what was coming. He stepped out on faith, trusting that God’s command would make sense in the end.
The same can be true for us. We might not be called to build a giant ark, but we are often called to step into the unknown, whether it’s pursuing a new career, moving to a new city, or simply saying yes to an opportunity that feels bigger than us. When we take that leap, God reveals the next step, just as He did for Noah.
When You Don’t Have All the Details
I’m no stranger to wanting control over the details. When I moved to Seattle, I wanted to know exactly how everything would work out. I was nervous about fitting into a new job, building a new support system, and adjusting to life so far away from home. But God doesn’t give us a complete blueprint for our lives. If He did, where would faith come in?
In Seattle, I didn’t have everything figured out right away. But one by one, things started to fall into place. I found opportunities that aligned with my skills, made new friends, and even began to appreciate the beauty in Seattle’s rain and gray skies. Step by step, God showed me the way forward, just as He had done before. What I initially feared became an experience of growth, teaching me to trust the process even when I couldn’t see the full picture.
You don’t need to have everything mapped out. Faith is about moving forward without all the facts. It’s trusting that God will provide the resources, people, and opportunities just when you need them. Faith doesn’t require us to see the full picture; it simply requires us to trust that God holds the brush.
Self-Assessment Questions:
- What step of faith is on your heart right now? Is there something you feel drawn toward but have hesitated to act on because you can’t see the full picture?
- What are you waiting for? Are you holding back because you want more clarity, security, or control? What if you took the first step anyway?
- When have you experienced God leading you step by step in the past? Reflect on moments when you didn’t know how things would turn out but found that everything worked out, often better than expected.
- How can you nurture your faith in this season? Faith grows when we use it. Are there small steps you can take today that will build your confidence for bigger leaps tomorrow?
Final Thoughts:
Stepping out on faith isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about moving forward, even when we don’t see the full picture. Just like Noah, we are asked to trust the knowledge of God we already have and take the next step, even if it doesn’t make sense in the moment. And when we do, God meets us there. He opens doors, provides resources, and leads us forward into the destiny He has for us.
Faith doesn’t promise certainty in the process, but it does promise certainty in God’s presence. So, if you feel that nudge, that pull toward something more, maybe it’s time to take the leap. You may not have all the details, but you don’t need them. God is already holding the blueprint to your life, and He’s ready to guide you one step at a time.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for having a perfect plan for my life, even when I can’t see the details. Help me to trust You with the unknown, and give me the courage to take the steps of faith You are calling me to. Lead me into the purpose You have set for me, one step at a time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
