Praying Through Life’s Biggest Challenges
Life often presents us with mountains—challenges that feel insurmountable. Whether it’s financial burdens, health scares, or dreams that seem out of reach, these obstacles can make us feel powerless. Yet, we are reminded time and again that faith, combined with fervent prayer, can move even the most formidable mountains. This truth isn’t just a lofty ideal; it’s a divine promise that I’ve seen unfold in my own life.
One of the most significant mountains I ever faced was during my last semester of college. I had exhausted my financial aid, and without it, the dream I’d held for years—studying abroad in France—felt like it was slipping away. Desperate, I turned to my financial aid counselor, hoping for some solution. The only option he gave me was rare and unlikely: ask the university to cosign a loan for me. In most cases, the university wouldn’t do this, but I decided to take a chance. I wrote an essay justifying my need for the loan, submitted it, and then prayed like never before. I begged God, pleading for the opportunity to fulfill this dream. And then, my mountain moved. The university agreed to cosign, and I was over the moon with joy.
That experience taught me that faith, paired with prayer and action, holds the power to change even the most impossible situations. In this post, I’ll share insights into how you can cultivate faith and speak to your own mountains, trusting that God will make a way.
Faith in Action: Aligning with God’s Power
Mark, who learned directly from the apostles Peter and Paul, wrote his gospel to highlight Christ’s identity through His actions. One of the most powerful lessons Jesus shared with His disciples is found in Mark 11:23: “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”
This verse is more than an invitation—it’s a challenge to trust God fully. When I faced the financial obstacle of studying abroad, I didn’t sit back and hope for a solution to fall into my lap. Faith isn’t passive; it requires action. I wrote the essay, put my case forward, and then committed it all to prayer, believing that God could move the mountain of financial limitations standing in my way. In moments like these, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words ring true: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” I couldn’t see how it would all come together, but I stepped forward anyway, trusting that God had a plan.
Faith calls us to take that step even when we’re unsure of the outcome. By acting in faith, we invite God into our situation, knowing that He can move in ways we cannot predict.
Speak to Your Mountain: The Authority of Prayer
Mountains often speak to us in the form of doubt, fear, or discouragement. When I first heard that the university rarely cosigned loans for students, my immediate reaction was doubt. Could this really work? Was my dream out of reach? These are the kinds of thoughts that creep in when we let our mountains speak louder than our faith.
But Jesus teaches us not to let mountains have the last word. He instructs us to speak to our challenges with authority. In James 5:16, it says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” That prayer—fueled by unwavering faith—has the power to shift realities. As I prayed over my study abroad application, I didn’t just ask for a miracle; I claimed it in Jesus’ name. I spoke to my mountain of financial limitations and declared that it would not stand in my way. As the quote goes, “Do not tell God how big your mountain is. Tell your mountain how big your God is.”
Speaking directly to the obstacles in our lives isn’t about denial; it’s about affirming God’s power over them. When we exercise the authority given to us through Christ, our faith becomes a force that can move mountains.
The Power of God’s Timing
One of the hardest lessons to learn in faith is that God’s timing doesn’t always match our own. After submitting my essay and fervently praying for a positive outcome, I had to wait. It’s in these moments of waiting that doubt can creep in. But I knew I had to trust God’s plan, even if the answer wasn’t immediate. As Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
There is divine strength in waiting, in trusting that the right answer will come at the right time. And when the news finally came that the university had agreed to cosign my loan, I realized that faith isn’t just about getting what you ask for—it’s about trusting the process. God’s timing is always perfect, even when we can’t see the full picture.
Soul Insights
1. Faith Requires Action
Faith alone isn’t enough—it needs to be paired with action. When I faced the possibility of losing my dream of studying abroad, I didn’t sit back. I wrote the essay, asked for help, and prayed. This combination of faith and action allowed God to work through me.
2. Speak Life Over Your Situation
Our words carry immense power. When we speak life into difficult situations, we activate a spiritual force that can move mountains. I prayed, but I also declared that the financial obstacle in my way would be removed. Speaking life over a situation aligns us with God’s will.
3. Trust God’s Timing
Sometimes the answer to our prayers doesn’t come right away, and that’s okay. Trust that God’s timing is perfect. During the wait, lean into faith, knowing that God is working things out in the unseen.
4. Overcome Fear with Faith
Even in moments of doubt, choose to have faith. I was terrified that my dream of studying in France wouldn’t happen, but instead of giving in to fear, I pushed through with prayer and trust. Faith isn’t the absence of fear—it’s moving forward despite it.
5. Celebrate the Small Victories
Every step forward is a victory, even if the mountain hasn’t fully moved yet. When I got word that the university would cosign my loan, it was a massive win. But there were smaller victories along the way, like receiving encouragement from God during my prayer time. Celebrate those moments—they’re proof that God is moving.
Final Thoughts
Mountains will always rise before us in life, but no mountain is too big for God to move. Whether you’re dealing with financial struggles, health concerns, or personal dreams that seem too far out of reach, remember that through fervent prayer and unwavering faith, you have the power to command those mountains to move.
As Mark 11:23 promises, “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart… will have whatever he says.” This is more than a comforting thought—it’s an active invitation to partner with God in reshaping the world around us.
Today, reflect on the mountains in your own life. Where do you need to step out in faith? What can you speak life over? Take the first step, pray fervently, and trust that God is with you. Watch as the mountains before you begin to move.
