Have you ever had a conversation that seemed insignificant at the time but stayed with you long after? Life is made up of these fleeting encounters—brief moments that we often overlook but that can ripple out and touch others in ways we may never fully realize. These seemingly small interactions have the power to impact not only the people we meet but also how we live our lives. I experienced this firsthand on an early morning flight back to Los Angeles from Buffalo, where a simple ride-share turned into a reflection on the deeper impact of kindness.

Brief Encounters

It was an early morning, and I had barely woken up when I climbed into my ride-share. The driver didn’t say much at first, just quietly followed the GPS instructions. After a few minutes, I decided to break the silence and asked her if Buffalo only had one airport. She confirmed I was headed to the right place and then mentioned another smaller airport, mostly for international flights from Canada. We laughed about how it would’ve been terrible if I’d gone to the wrong one.

That little interaction opened the floodgates. She slowly began to share her experiences as a driver. One story stood out. She told me about a time a passenger accused her of kidnapping for taking a different route. The app had suggested a slower route, and she had taken a freeway to save time. The passenger called the cops, and it was a whole ordeal that cost her time and money.

I felt sympathy for her. I couldn’t imagine dealing with something like that while just trying to do your job. Then, she shared another tragic story—one that still gives me chills. A fellow ride-share driver had been t-boned by a drunk driver while on his way to drop passengers off at the airport. Both the driver and his passengers died in the crash. It was a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be, even in routine moments.

As we pulled up to the terminal, I thanked her for the ride and wished her a good day. But that didn’t feel like enough. So, I offered up a quiet prayer for her, asking that she be blessed with safety and good earnings that day. It wasn’t a grand gesture, but it felt like the least I could do. I got out of the car and walked to my gate with about 45 minutes to spare, feeling reflective about the power of these small moments.

As I passed through security, a man complimented my backpack. It was a simple, kind comment, and I smiled, thanked him, and wished him a great day. But again, I felt something stir in my heart, and I silently prayed for him too—that he’d have a safe journey. These small interactions may have seemed ordinary, but they lingered with me, making me think deeply about how we impact each other in even the briefest of encounters.

The Power of Connection

It’s easy to dismiss these little moments as insignificant, especially when we’re distracted by the rush of life. We go through our daily routines, often unaware of the profound impact we can have on others. But every interaction—no matter how brief—holds the potential to leave a lasting mark.

I think back to the ride-share driver and the man at the airport. Neither encounter was life-changing on the surface, yet both reminded me of how we can bring a little more kindness into the world. A simple conversation, a small gesture, even a silent prayer can shift the energy of someone’s day.

Jesus understood the power of connection. He didn’t just preach to the masses—He engaged with people one-on-one, meeting them in the middle of their ordinary lives. His approach was rooted in love and compassion, and it reminds me that even our smallest acts can reflect God’s heart.

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)

We may never know the full impact of our actions, but if we move through life with kindness and love, we can trust that we’re creating ripples that extend beyond the present moment.

Living with Eternity in Mind

I often find myself thinking about eternity and how each moment in this life echoes into the next. What if every small interaction we have now is part of a much larger picture? I frequently imagine my life review—where every decision, every word, and every act of kindness is replayed. It’s not about fear or trying to be perfect, but about being intentional with how I move through the world.

On that early morning flight, those brief interactions with the driver and the man at the airport felt like more than passing moments. They reminded me that, in the grand scheme of things, even small acts of kindness and connection matter. We may never know whose day we’ve brightened or whose burden we’ve lightened, but that’s not the point. What matters is living with love and treating each moment as an opportunity to make a positive impact.

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12)

Whether it’s offering a kind word, a smile, or a prayer, we have the power to influence the world around us. And when we live with eternity in mind, these small moments become stepping stones to a life well-lived.

Soul Insights

1. Small Acts, Big Impact

Often, the smallest actions can leave the deepest impressions. A kind word or a listening ear can shift someone’s entire day. You may never know the full impact of your kindness, but it has the potential to reach far beyond that moment.

2. The Power of Prayer

Even if you don’t know someone’s struggles or needs, offering a silent prayer can bring them into the presence of love and protection. Prayer connects us to something greater, allowing us to bless others, even strangers, in ways we may never see.

3. Kindness is a Choice

In every interaction, we have a choice to be kind or to ignore the opportunity. A smile, a compliment, or an empathetic word costs us nothing but can uplift someone else’s spirit immeasurably. Kindness is one of the few things we can give freely and receive back in abundance.

4. Eternity in Every Moment

Living with eternity in mind helps me stay aware of the significance of even the smallest interactions. If life is a series of moments, then how we treat people—whether we’re aware of it or not—becomes part of our legacy. I want my legacy to reflect love and kindness.

5. Gratitude Creates Ripples

Expressing gratitude, whether in words or actions, can have a profound effect on both the giver and the receiver. When you take a moment to be thankful or offer a blessing, it creates a ripple that can influence others to do the same. Gratitude is contagious, and it spreads quickly.

Final Thoughts

Life is made up of countless small moments, and how we choose to navigate those moments matters. Whether you’re in a ride-share, going through airport security, or just going about your daily routine, remember that each interaction carries weight. We may not always see the impact of our words or actions, but that doesn’t mean they don’t matter.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

So the next time you find yourself in a seemingly ordinary moment, pause and ask yourself: what kind of ripple effect can I create today? Whether through a kind word, a thoughtful prayer, or a simple smile, you have the power to make a difference. And who knows? That small act might just become part of someone else’s life review too.
