Life has a way of surprising us, especially when we least expect it. While traveling, even the best-laid plans can take an unexpected turn, teaching us to adapt and trust the journey. Recently, I had an experience that perfectly illustrated this while traveling from Marseille to Paris, intending to spend a spontaneous night in the city. What unfolded was a series of unexpected events that taught me the value of flexibility, faith, and going with the flow.
The Excitement of a Change in Plans:
Our journey began in Marseille, where the sun was hot, and the days were bright. As we arrived in Paris, the stark contrast was immediate. The city greeted us with a chill in the air and overcast skies, quite different from Marseille’s warmth. Disembarking from the train, I felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty about our impromptu plan to stay an extra night. A small part of me started thinking that if our plan didn’t work out, I would be okay with it. It would save us the hassle of dragging our luggage to another hotel.
We hurried to the Eurostar office to see if we could change our tickets from Paris to London to depart the following day. The representative gave us a glimmer of hope, suggesting it might be possible. However, after several attempts, he confirmed that we could not make the change. At that moment, I felt a strange mix of disappointment and relief. Part of me was sad that we wouldn’t get to enjoy a spontaneous night in Paris, but another part of me was glad we didn’t have to figure out new logistics in an unfamiliar city.
After receiving the news, my friend turned to me and said, “Well, at least we tried. We need to have a properly planned vacation in Paris.” I nodded, echoing his sentiment, “Yeah, at least we tried. Now I need to book my lodging for London.”
Rushing Against Time:
With only a few minutes to spare before the Eurostar boarding, I needed to act fast. We grabbed a quick bite at a shop inside the waiting area and found a spot to eat. The rush of our plans changing, combined with the urgency of catching our train, made it a bit of a whirlwind. As boarding was announced, we scrambled to our coach, finally breathing a sigh of relief as we settled into our seats. That’s when the next challenge began—I had to find a last-minute lodging in London.
Navigating Uncertainty with Faith:
Booking an Airbnb at the last minute can be tricky. Prices can be high, and hosts often take time to respond. Still, I decided to take a chance. I started browsing options, hoping for something within my budget and close to St. Pancras station, where we would be arriving. I prayed for a quick response from a host and trusted that things would work out. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
To my relief, within an hour—while still on the train—the host responded positively. However, there was another twist: they could only check me in after 11:30 p.m., an hour after our arrival in London. I agreed to the condition, grateful to have a place to stay. The host suggested I wait inside the Starbucks at the station until I received a text from them confirming that the room was ready. I appreciated the flexibility and prayed for everything to align smoothly.
Staying Calm in the Unknown:
My friend, who had been concerned about where I’d end up that night, kept checking in on me. His worry was touching, but I reassured him. I’d learned to stay calm in uncertainty. As Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” I knew that everything would work out in the end, as it always does.
This experience reminded me of a quote by Corrie ten Boom: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” That night, I wasn’t afraid. I knew that no matter how uncertain the situation seemed, I could trust God’s guidance and find peace in that trust. Even when things didn’t go as planned, I knew a solution would present itself.
The Lesson of Flexibility:
As I waited at Starbucks for the confirmation text from the Airbnb host, I reflected on how often we make plans, only for life to take us in unexpected directions. Sometimes, these detours lead to outcomes far better than we could have imagined. My friend’s comment about needing a properly planned vacation in Paris reminded me of Alan Lakein’s words: “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” This experience wasn’t just about choosing between Paris or London—it was about realizing the value of thoughtful planning while also learning to adapt, trust the process, and find contentment in the journey, no matter where it leads.
When the host finally texted that I could head over, I felt a wave of gratitude. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.” This unexpected turn in my journey was just another “experiment” in life—a chance to grow, learn, and trust more deeply.
Soul Insights
1. Embrace Flexibility:
Life often throws us curveballs, especially when we have our hearts set on a specific plan. Flexibility is not about abandoning our goals but adapting to the changes and making the best out of the situation. When we let go of rigid expectations, we allow room for new opportunities and experiences. Flexibility helps us to remain open to unexpected adventures, like a spontaneous day trip instead of a night in a city, or finding joy in a different kind of experience than what we initially envisioned.
2. Trust the Process:
Trusting the process means believing that things will work out as they are meant to, even if the path is not immediately clear. This doesn’t mean being passive—it’s about taking necessary actions with a sense of calm assurance. Just as I trusted that an Airbnb would be available, we must trust that the journey, with all its twists and turns, is guiding us towards growth and understanding. Trusting the process allows us to see challenges not as obstacles but as steps toward where we are meant to be.
3. Stay Calm in Uncertainty:
Uncertainty is a part of life, and while it can be uncomfortable, staying calm in the face of it allows us to think clearly and make better decisions. Anxiety or panic often clouds judgment and can lead to hasty or regrettable choices. By maintaining a sense of peace and composure, like waiting patiently for the host’s response or deciding to go with the flow, we can navigate any unexpected change more gracefully. Inner calm is a powerful tool that grounds us amid the chaos.
4. Rely on a Higher Power:
There are moments when we have done all we can, and the only thing left to do is trust in something greater than ourselves. For me, that’s relying on God. Believing that there is a divine plan at work brings comfort, especially when things seem out of control. It reassures us that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is a guiding force working on our behalf. This reliance helps transform worry into peace and uncertainty into faith.
5. Be Grateful for What Works Out and What Doesn’t:
Gratitude isn’t just for the good moments; it’s for the lessons that come from what doesn’t go as planned. Even when things don’t work out as we envisioned, there is value in those experiences. They teach us resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of finding joy in unexpected places. Whether it’s discovering a new way of navigating travel or learning to be okay with uncertainty, every situation has something to offer if we approach it with gratitude.
Final Thoughts:
Travel and life are filled with unexpected turns. What started as an unplanned night in Paris turned into a lesson in flexibility, faith, and trust. This experience reaffirmed my belief that things tend to work out in the end, even if they don’t follow our initial plans. By embracing flexibility, trusting the process, and having faith, we can navigate life’s unpredictability with grace and peace. I am reminded that with every detour comes an opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen our trust in God’s plan. And sometimes, those unexpected paths lead to the most memorable experiences.
