The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the lively streets of Cours Julien in Marseille. It was early evening, and the neighborhood was brimming with energy. Cafes and restaurants were filled with people, their laughter and chatter creating a symphony of sounds that filled the air. Unlike the tourist-heavy Vieux Port, Cours Julien had a more authentic, diverse vibe. It was refreshing to see people fully engaged in conversations, with no phones in sight—just pure, human connection.

My friend and I decided to join the scene at Cafe La Muse, a charming spot that perfectly captured the bohemian spirit of the area. We found a table, ordered water and rosé wine, and settled in to enjoy the moment. The plan was simple: relax with a book, soak in the atmosphere, and then head to dinner. In the midst of the lively chatter and vibrant surroundings, there was a sense of peace and stillness in just being present.

After a while, I started looking up dinner options nearby. We decided on a restaurant called La Passarelle. Wanting to ensure we had a table, I tried calling to make a reservation but ended up reaching the wrong number. Thinking it would be easier, I attempted to book a table online. Little did I know, the restaurant I booked was not in Marseille, but in South Carolina, USA! I quickly canceled that reservation and thought I found the correct website. Confident that we were all set, we left Cafe La Muse and walked over to La Passarelle.

Upon arrival, I proudly told the waiter we had a reservation. His puzzled look told me something was off. “Did you call?” he asked. I explained that I had reserved it online. He responded with a chuckle, “We don’t have a website.” It turned out there was another restaurant nearby with a very similar name, and that was where I had mistakenly booked. In that moment, I was reminded of the quote by John Lennon, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” We had planned for one thing, but life had something different in store for us.

Despite the mix-up, the staff at La Passarelle graciously offered us a table. However, we decided to take it as a sign to explore more of what the area had to offer. As we retraced our steps up the street, my friend suggested we try a Pakistani restaurant nearby. Intrigued by the idea, I agreed. Sometimes, it’s in the unexpected detours that we find the best surprises.

The restaurant was warm and welcoming, filled with the rich aromas of spices and sizzling dishes. We ordered a menu for two, which turned out to be a full-course meal that exceeded our expectations. As we ate, I reflected on how a small mistake led us to a delightful experience we might have otherwise missed. It brought to mind Proverbs 16:9: “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” We may plan our way, but often it is in the divine detours that we find the most joy.

By the time we made our way back to the hotel, it was close to 11 PM. I couldn’t help but think of another quote: “The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn’t even think to ask.” (Jeff Johnson). The evening had started with a simple plan, but it unfolded into a memorable adventure filled with confusion, laughter, discovery, and a reminder that the best experiences often come unplanned.

Soul Insights

1. Stay Present in the Moment: In a world constantly distracted by screens, there’s a deep richness in being fully present. As we noticed at Cours Julien, true connection happens when we engage with the people around us, not our phones.

2. Embrace Divine Detours: Sometimes, life takes us down a path we didn’t intend. Trust that these unexpected routes are often where we find growth, joy, and new experiences. As Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, while we plan our steps, God directs them.

3. Find Peace in Uncertainty: It’s natural to feel frustrated when plans go awry. However, by leaning into uncertainty, we can find peace. Remember Psalm 46:10—sometimes, we need to be still and know that everything is unfolding as it should.

4. Every Moment is a Lesson: Mistakes and mix-ups are just part of the journey. Instead of seeing them as setbacks, view them as opportunities to learn something new, try something different, or meet someone unexpected.

5. Cherish the Simple Joys: A simple meal, a conversation with a friend, or a stroll through a lively neighborhood—these are the moments that often stay with us the longest. As you go about your day, look for these simple joys and savor them fully.

Final Thoughts

The evening in Cours Julien was a great reminder that life’s most memorable moments often arise from the unplanned and the unexpected. It taught me to let go of the need to control every detail, to trust in the journey, and to find joy in the small, seemingly insignificant moments that truly make life rich. As Jeremiah 10:23 reminds us, “…that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” This scripture calls us to trust in a higher guidance, remaining open to the beautiful surprises and unexpected paths that unfold along the way.
