Today, I was reflecting on a well-known story from the Bible—the moment when Jesus turned water into wine. It’s a story about a wedding, a potential social disaster when the wine ran out, and how one simple act led to something extraordinary. This miracle, the first of many, showed more than just divine power. It highlighted compassion, authority over the natural world, and something even more personal: an invitation to trust.
At the heart of this story is a message that I hope we can all carry with us: trusting God in small, simple ways can open the door to miracles in our lives.
In John 2:7 (NKJV), it says: “Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the water pots with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim.”
At first glance, the instruction Jesus gave seemed confusing. The guests needed wine, not water. Yet, that’s often how life feels, right? Sometimes, we’re asked to do things that don’t make immediate sense. It could be forgiving someone when we feel hurt, taking a chance on a new direction when we don’t feel ready, or choosing patience and kindness when we want to defend ourselves. These moments might seem small, but they often lead to surprising outcomes.
A Lesson in Trust
What strikes me about this story is how it shows the power of simple trust. The staff at the wedding didn’t argue or question the odd request; they just went ahead and filled those pots. And because of that small act of trust, something incredible happened.
It got me thinking: how often do I miss out on something good because I’m waiting for everything to make sense first? How often do I hold onto feelings of bitterness or doubt because it feels safer than stepping into the unknown?
Maybe what’s waiting on the other side of those moments of uncertainty is something better than we could have planned ourselves. Maybe it’s the “best wine” we’ve been hoping for, but it only comes when we’re willing to let go of needing all the answers and take a step of trust.
Living with Openness
What if we approached life with more openness? Not necessarily understanding every twist and turn but being willing to say, “Okay, I’ll fill the water pots,” even when we don’t know how things will turn out. Keeping a positive outlook, forgiving quickly, or stepping into new opportunities with courage might just be the beginnings of something beautiful.
A Small Act of Letting Go
This idea of letting go of what we can’t control applies in so many areas of life, even in the smallest moments, like driving. There are times I feel the urge to curse the person who cuts me off while driving. The frustration bubbles up, and I want to react. But then, I realize that would amount to nothing—just wasted energy on my part. So, I’ve learned to let it go and, instead, say a quick prayer for them. It’s a small thing, but in choosing not to let anger take over, I’ve found a bit more peace. And who knows? Maybe that simple shift in attitude opens the door to something better down the road.
Self Refection
1. Take a moment to consider: Is there something in your life right now where you feel a nudge to act, even if it doesn’t fully make sense?
2. Reflect on this: Are there areas where holding onto past hurts or frustrations might be keeping you from new opportunities or peace?
Final Thoughts
It’s easy to want all the answers before we act, but sometimes, the most amazing experiences come from just taking that first step. Whatever you’re facing today, maybe there’s an opportunity to try filling those “water pots” in your life and see what unfolds. Let’s remember that the journey may not always be clear, but each step taken in trust can lead to a beautiful surprise. The best wine could be just around the corner.
Call to Action
This week, try letting go of a small frustration or taking a small step of faith. See how it changes your perspective and opens you up to new possibilities. Sometimes, the most significant changes start with the simplest actions.
