Yesterday began like any other day. I woke up early, did some laundry, tinkered around my apartment, and played a bit on my keyboard. It felt like a quiet day—nothing special on the horizon. Then, my friend called to give me a reminder about the event we had planned for later that evening. She then came by to drop off tickets for the birthday bash downtown event, celebrating the 60th year of the Music Center. I love Dance Downtown events—they’re free, fun, and full of life. But this time, there was a small $5 fee, and I wasn’t sure if I still wanted to go. Should I go? Would it be worth it? I found myself waffling.

My friend seemed unsure too. When she asked me if I still planned to attend, I felt a tug in my spirit—something urging me to push past the hesitation. “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24), I thought to myself. With a deep breath, I decided to show up, trusting that there was something more waiting for me.

As I arrived downtown, the air was alive with energy. The DJ’s beats pulsed through the crowd, and people were lining up with anticipation. The venue, usually open and spacious, was packed with excited partygoers. The warm lights, laughter, and music created a festive atmosphere that instantly lifted my mood. Just by stepping into this space, I felt my earlier doubts melt away. I realized that sometimes all we need to do is be present, and the rest will fall into place.

That $5 went much further than I ever could have imagined. Tacos, champagne, cupcakes—the Music Center pulled out all the stops for this event. I found a table and soon met a kind couple who joined me. We shared easy conversation and laughter as we held each other’s spots at the table. It reminded me of how simple interactions can form connections that add to the richness of life. Community doesn’t have to be formal or planned; it can happen anywhere, even over tacos and champagne.

When my friend arrived, we made our way to the dance floor. The dance instructors got the crowd moving, and soon, we were swept up in the rhythm of the music. We danced with strangers, laughed, and let go of everything else. It felt like pure freedom—an unexpected gift in the middle of what started as an ordinary day. John Lennon’s words rang true: “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” I had shown up with no expectations, and yet here I was, fully immersed in the moment.

One of my favorite parts of the night was stepping into the photo booths. We posed, laughed, and captured our joy in both stills and a 360-degree video. It was a reminder that, as Richard Wagner said, “Joy is not in things; it is in us.” This night wasn’t about the material things we had, but about the connections, the laughter, and the memories we were creating.

And just when I thought the night couldn’t get any better, they surprised us with parting gifts—clear plastic tote bags that many stadium venues require for entry. It was such a thoughtful touch, and it left us smiling as we headed home. I left feeling full—full of joy, gratitude, and a sense of contentment that only comes when we trust the process and show up for life. “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap” (Luke 6:38).

Now, every time I look back at the videos and photos, a smile creeps onto my face. What started as a simple day turned into something so much more, just because I made the decision to show up.
