Upon reflecting on my coworker’s retirement after thirty-two years of service, I couldn’t help but think about the monumental changes she has witnessed—not just in the workplace, but in the world. In 1992, the internet was still in its infancy, cell phones were rare, and email was a new concept. Fast forward to today, and the way we live, work, and communicate has transformed beyond recognition.

I’ve always supported the advancement of technology. It has made so many aspects of life easier and more connected. The internet, for example, has revolutionized how we do everything. What used to require a trip to the store can now be done from the comfort of our homes with just a few clicks. Goods are delivered straight to our doorsteps, and we can connect with people across the globe in an instant. Even our work lives have changed—remote work is now common, something that would have seemed impossible just a few decades ago.

But as much as I embrace the benefits of technology, I have to admit, it can be intimidating. I still remember when cell phones first came out. For the longest time, I resisted getting one. I didn’t want people calling me all the time and felt that if I had a cell phone, I’d lose the freedom to be on my own. There was something about being unreachable that felt liberating. It’s funny now, though, because despite my efforts to stay off the grid, I’m not off the grid at all.

Eventually, I gave in and got a cell phone while I was in college in the early 2000s. It became a necessity—something I could no longer avoid. And while I feared being constantly called, that fear never really materialized. People don’t call as much anymore, but instead, I’m bombarded with text messages, which at times feel just as overwhelming and annoying. It’s ironic how technology has evolved—what I feared has taken on a different form, but the constant connection remains.

It didn’t stop there, of course. I also joined Facebook when it first came out, back when it was only for college students. At the time, it was exciting—a virtual yearbook where I could keep up with my college friends. Over time, though, the novelty wore off, and like so many other technologies, it became just another everyday tool that we often take for granted.

I used to write a lot of letters and emails. There was something special about sitting down and crafting a handwritten letter to a friend or sending a thoughtful email. But now, even that has faded. With so many tools available to communicate, I find myself doing less of what I once enjoyed. And that’s one of the pitfalls of this technological revolution—it’s easy to take these tools for granted because they’ve become so ingrained in our daily lives.

And now, we’re on the cusp of another revolution—artificial intelligence. It’s already impacting how we create, how we work, and how we live. AI-generated art, writing, and even customer service are becoming part of our everyday lives. And while I support this progress, I also find myself asking, “Where is all of this heading?” Will humanoid robots become as common as smartphones? Will AI continue to reshape our world in ways we can’t yet imagine? I hope that as we move forward, we can find a way to balance technological advancements with preserving what makes us human.

Change is constant, and the pace of that change seems to be accelerating. But one thing is for sure—just as the internet and cell phones have transformed our world, so too will AI and whatever comes next. It’s exciting, but it also reminds me of the importance of staying adaptable in a rapidly evolving world, even when it feels daunting.

Soul Insights

1. Change is inevitable, and with each technological leap, our world transforms in profound ways.

The advancements we experience, from the rise of the internet to the development of AI, have reshaped every corner of our lives. These changes can bring both excitement and uncertainty, as we navigate the impact on our daily routines, relationships, and work. While change can be daunting, it also offers the opportunity for growth and the chance to adapt to a future that holds endless possibilities.

2. The past reminds us of how far we’ve come, and the future beckons with possibilities we can’t yet see.

Reflecting on the technological advancements of the past few decades reminds us of the remarkable progress we’ve witnessed. Yet, as we look to the future, we are reminded that there are still so many innovations and changes yet to come, ones that may completely reshape how we live. The unknown can be both thrilling and intimidating, but it also offers a sense of hope and anticipation for what’s possible.

3. Adaptability in an evolving world is essential to thrive.

In a rapidly changing world, it’s those who remain open to new ideas, technologies, and ways of living who will find success and fulfillment. Adapting to change is not just about surviving—it’s about thriving in an environment that constantly challenges us to grow. Flexibility and a willingness to learn are crucial for navigating the shifts that come with progress.

4. As technology reshapes our lives, we must ensure it enhances our humanity, not diminishes it.

While technology can improve our efficiency and expand our capabilities, it’s important to stay grounded in what makes us human—our empathy, connections, and values. We must ensure that as we integrate new technologies into our lives, we don’t lose sight of the importance of personal relationships and meaningful interactions. Technology should serve to enhance our lives, not replace the things that make life rich and fulfilling.

5. The future may be uncertain, but the power to shape it lies in how we choose to engage with the present.

Although we can’t predict every development that will come, we have the ability to shape our own path by how we respond to the changes we encounter today. By engaging thoughtfully with the present moment—whether through technology, personal relationships, or our own personal growth—we can lay the foundation for a future that aligns with our values and aspirations. How we live now determines how we will experience the world to come.
