On Tuesday (08/20/2024), we celebrated the retirement of one of my coworkers who has been with our organization for thirty-two years. As I watched her at the party, surrounded by friends and colleagues, I couldn’t help but reflect on the passage of time. Thirty-two years seems like a long time, but as I listened to her stories and the many wonderful things people had to say about her, it felt like those years had flown by in the blink of an eye.
One thing I’ll remember about her is how she was always willing to help, even when her plate was already full. There was a time when I was supposed to escort therapy dogs and their handlers, but I was called away from the office for something else at the last minute. I asked her for help, and even though she was busy, she stepped in and took over for me. It wasn’t just that moment either—she consistently stepped up when other colleagues needed advice or support. I recall asking her for tips when she took an overseas job, which she did three times during her career. She was generous with her advice, and I appreciated her willingness to guide me, despite her own challenges.
As I reflected on her retirement, I couldn’t help but think about my own future. What will my retirement look like? I hope that when my time comes, I will have made an impact on my coworkers, just as she did on others. Her legacy is one of kindness, helpfulness, and wisdom, and it’s inspiring to think that perhaps I could leave a similar mark when my time comes to step away from my career.
Time feels like it moves so quickly, almost like a train that briefly stops at each station before speeding on to the next. I think about how not too long ago, we were celebrating Christmas, then it was New Year’s, and now, summer is almost over. I was at the store the other day and saw Halloween and Thanksgiving merchandise on display, even though we haven’t finished summer yet. Time doesn’t wait—it keeps moving, whether we’re ready for it or not.
I feel this passage of time in so many areas of my life. Just the other day, I woke up on Monday, and before I knew it, it was Friday. It’s as though I blinked, and the week vanished. It happens all the time—moments come and go so quickly, whether it’s making plans with friends, reaching a milestone at work, or celebrating a holiday. The moments pass, and before we know it, they’re just memories.
I also think about my nieces, who are grown now and have families of their own. It feels like only yesterday they were little kids, and now, they have kids of their own. Meanwhile, I’m still here, building my career and sometimes feeling like I’m still in my 20s. It’s amazing and overwhelming how time moves us forward, even when we feel like we’re standing still.
As I ponder all these things, I’m reminded of Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” It’s a reminder that time flows according to its own rhythm, and each season of life has its own purpose. My coworker’s retirement is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, and it reminds me to appreciate the seasons I’m in right now.
Another scripture that resonates with me is Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” It’s a reminder that time is precious and that we should strive to live wisely, making the most of the days we have. Watching my coworker retire after a full career makes me want to be intentional with my time, ensuring that I leave a positive impact on those around me.
As I reflect on time’s passage, I’m also reminded of a quote by Steve Jobs: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” It’s a powerful reminder that we must live authentically, following our own paths and making the most of the moments we’re given.
The passage of time often catches us by surprise. It moves forward relentlessly, and though it may feel overwhelming at times, it also leaves us with memories, moments, and the realization that life is fleeting. That’s why I’m also reminded of James 4:14: “You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” Life is fragile, and time is fleeting, so we must cherish each moment we’re given.
As I think about my coworker’s retirement and the legacy she’s left, I’m filled with gratitude for the time I’ve spent with her and the lessons she’s shared. I hope that in my own journey, I can live with the same generosity, kindness, and wisdom that she did, leaving behind a legacy that will impact others long after I’ve moved on.
