Author’s Notes:
Every so often, I receive these thoughtful notes from a friend of mine. They are always filled with insights and reflections that resonate with me. I enjoy reading them so much that I wanted to share them with all of you. I hope you find the some nuggets of wisdom and inspiration in her studies like I do.
Today’s scripture reminds us that God granted Elisha’s request because his motives were pure and his desire was to accomplish more for God’s glory. In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus encourages us to persist in pursuing God and to learn to ask for what is truly good. Remember this truth: Ask, and Good Things Will Be Given to You!
2 Kings 2:9 (NLT)
“When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.’ And Elisha replied, ‘Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.’”
Elisha had faithfully served alongside the prophet Elijah for many years, learning and growing under his mentorship. As Elijah prepared to be taken up to heaven, he asked Elisha what he desired most. Now, Elisha could have asked for something simple or ordinary, but he had learned the power of bold prayers. So, instead, he asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit—a double measure of the anointing, favor, and miracle-working power that had defined Elijah’s life and ministry.
It’s worth noting that Elijah didn’t rebuke Elisha for his boldness. He didn’t say, “You better ask for something more realistic.” Instead, Elijah admired Elisha’s courage and ambition. He essentially said, “Stay with me, and you will receive what you have asked for.” And that’s exactly what happened. Elisha went on to perform twice as many miracles as Elijah—proof that his bold request was granted by God.
This story is a powerful reminder that we should not be afraid to ask God for more—more of His presence, more of His blessings, more of His power in our lives. You may be content with where you are today, but God has so much more in store for you. Don’t limit yourself by small prayers. Be bold in your faith and in your requests, knowing that God delights in giving good gifts to His children.
Prayer
Father, I am so grateful for every blessing and provision You have given me. Today, I boldly ask for the double portion You have reserved for those who seek You with all their hearts. Open the doors to greater opportunities, and lead me into the fullness of Your plan for my life. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
