There are moments in life that test us in ways we never imagined. For me, one of those moments came when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. It was during this difficult time that I learned just how powerful friendship and generosity can be. In life, we often face challenges that push us to our limits, testing our strength, faith, and resilience. During such times, it’s not uncommon to find support from unexpected places—sometimes from people we barely know. This is a story about how a friend’s extraordinary act of kindness allowed me to focus on what mattered most when my mom was battling cancer.

As Proverbs 17:17 reminds us, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” This scripture came alive for me during one of the most challenging periods of my life.

When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I found myself in a difficult position. I was in between jobs and chose not to take on a permanent role because I needed the flexibility to care for my mom. My sister and I took turns helping out, making sure we could both have time to ourselves while being there for our mom. To make ends meet, I worked through an employment agency that found me temporary jobs. This arrangement allowed me to be there for my mom, but it also meant that my income was unpredictable and often not enough to cover all my expenses.

During the times when I wasn’t working, I often found myself chatting online with a friend in London. We met briefly in London when I was visiting, and though we were more acquaintances than close friends at the time, our online chats quickly deepened our connection. He worked in the IT industry, and our initial conversations started around coding—something I was interested in learning. As we talked more, our conversations naturally shifted to deeper topics, including spirituality, our life challenges, and the ups and downs of our jobs. He was a fellow Christian, and despite the distance, we found a strong connection through our shared faith and similar experiences.

One day, our conversation turned to why I had moved from Los Angeles to San Jose, and I opened up to him about my mom’s cancer diagnosis and the financial pressures I was under. I told him that if I didn’t have to worry about money, I would dedicate all my time to taking care of my mom. He asked me a simple yet profound question: “If money wasn’t an issue, would you still be working?” My honest answer was no—I was only working because I had financial obligations to meet.

Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” My friend embodied this scripture in the most generous way possible, offering to help carry my burden.

What happened next was something I never expected. My friend proposed that he could financially support me so that I could focus on caring for my mom full-time. I was completely shocked and deeply moved by his offer. Here was someone who, despite our brief acquaintance, was willing to step in and help me in such a significant way. I never imagined that our conversations about coding and life would lead to this, but it was clear that he genuinely cared about my situation.

After seeking advice from some trusted friends, I decided to share my financial situation with him. He asked me what my total monthly expenses were and assured me that he could support me for however long I needed. In that same week, he quickly sent me the money I needed. It happened so fast that I was able to tell my employment agency that I was going to take a break from work. Knowing that my financial needs were covered, I could focus entirely on being with my mom. The timing was incredibly fortunate because, just two weeks after he sent that money, my mom passed away.

Those two weeks became the most precious time I had with her. Without the financial burden hanging over my head, I could be fully present, creating memories that I will cherish forever. My friend’s quick and selfless act made all the difference during that difficult time. Those final two weeks were a gift I could never have given myself. They allowed me to say goodbye in a way that was peaceful and without the distractions of daily life. It was a time of deep reflection and connection with my mom, one that I will always hold close to my heart.

Even though he was willing to support me indefinitely, it turned out that I only needed his help for that one month. He told me I could repay him if I wanted to, but if I couldn’t, that was okay with him too. His understanding and generosity were beyond anything I could have expected. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” This verse reassures me that God provides for our needs, often through the kindness of others, as I experienced.

A few months later, I visited London and met up with my friend in person. When I saw him, I couldn’t hold back my tears. I was so overwhelmed with gratitude for what he had done for me and my mom. His kindness gave me the gift of time with my mom that I could never have gotten back, and for that, I will always be grateful. As Albert Schweitzer said, “Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another human being.” My friend’s generosity reignited my strength during a very dark time.
