The sun was blazing hot that summer. I had just finished my summer program in Paris. A friend from London came to visit, and we spent four days gallivanting around the city, sightseeing. One of the highlights of our trip was Montmartre, a place that lived up to all my expectations.
On that day, we walked up the cobblestoned road leading to the Sacré-Cœur. The scent of freshly baked croissants mingled with the earthy aroma of the cobblestones, creating a uniquely Parisian atmosphere. The area was already teeming with tourists from all over the world. My friend, full of excitement on his first visit to Paris, walked excitedly ahead of me, his eyes wide with wonder.
“Look at that painting!” he exclaimed, pointing at a vibrant canvas. “I wish I could take it home.”
Montmartre is an arts district, with artists lining the sidewalks, displaying their colorful creations. If I were a local, I would have bought one or two paintings. The neighborhood is steeped in artistic history, having been frequented by the likes of Van Gogh and Picasso. Van Gogh lived in Montmartre with his brother at one point and painted several works inspired by the area. The lively atmosphere is magnetic, drawing people in from all walks of life.
I was particularly attracted to Montmartre because of the 2001 French film “Amélie.” After watching the film, I was eager to experience Montmartre in person, and it did not disappoint. The quaint cafes, the artists at work, and the panoramic view of Paris from the steps of the Sacré-Cœur were just as enchanting as I had imagined.

As we approached the steps leading to the basilica, we noticed a large crowd gathered, watching a mime impersonating passersby. My friend and I walked by, and to our great surprise, the mime jumped on my friend’s back. His startled reaction drew laughter from the audience, and I couldn’t help but laugh along. After entertaining the crowd, the mime jumped off, and we continued up the stairs towards the basilica, still chuckling.
The mime incident remains a cherished memory, and we still laugh about it to this day. Montmartre, with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, truly left an indelible mark on both of us.
