Have you ever had surgery? What for?

When I was 14 years old, I experienced excruciating stomach pain. My parents initially thought it was just gas, so I tried going to the toilet, but nothing helped. The pain persisted throughout the night, and I couldn’t sleep. In tears and unable to bear the pain any longer, I ran to my parents’ bedroom in the early hours of the morning. Finally, my father decided to take me to the hospital.

At the hospital, we discovered that my appendix was on the verge of bursting. I don’t remember everything that happened next, but I knew I needed surgery immediately. The doctor mentioned that if we had waited any longer, my appendix would have burst, causing a serious infection that would have been difficult to treat. The thought of that was terrifying.

I went into surgery and had my appendix removed. I don’t remember much because I was under anesthesia during the procedure. After the surgery, I was taken to the recovery room, where my family came to visit me. I distinctly remember my third sister coming by and showing me fried chicken that I couldn’t eat because I wasn’t allowed solid food yet. The doctors had told my parents that once I passed gas, I could go home.

My father visited me and sang funny songs about farts, which made me laugh so much that it hurt. I had to ask him to stop because laughing was painful. Despite being in the hospital, the experience wasn’t so bad. The pain was gone, and I felt fine. My family’s visits, my dad’s funny songs, and my sister trying to make me jealous with her food made the whole situation more bearable.

In the end, when I finally passed gas, I was allowed to go home. Looking back, it turned out to be a good memory and a positive experience despite the initial pain and fear.
