I’ve moved far too often since I was 17 years old. Yet, no matter where life takes me, I always boomerang back to Los Angeles. Depending on how you experience the city, it can be a place of dreams or broken dreams. For me, it was the lure of the film industry that first drew me here. I dreamed of making movies, envisioning myself as a cinematographer. However, the high cost of film school and the uncertainty of stable employment in the industry led me down a different path. My aspirations shifted from movie dreams to public service, leaving me to wonder what might have been had I persisted.

I’ve lived in various cities and countries. I moved to California from a place called the City of Golden Friendship on the island of Mindanao. From California, I relocated to Orlando, Florida, for Boot Camp training, which was a brief stint before moving to Hawaii, where I lived for three years. After Hawaii, I found myself in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, Washington, for a year and a half. From there, my journey took me to Misawa, Japan, before I returned to Oak Harbor for a few months. Eventually, I moved to Los Angeles to start college.

During a visit to family in Sydney, Australia, I recall sharing with a friend my dream of moving to Los Angeles to work in the movie or music industry. Two years later, that dream became a reality. I moved to Los Angeles in 1999 and have stayed here ever since, always returning despite my periodic departures.

Los Angeles has a hold on me. Although I’m technically a transplant, I feel like a local. The city has become my home, and while I might move again one day, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Los Angeles, with its unique blend of promise and nostalgia, has wrapped me around its finger.

1.) Embrace the Journey
Moving frequently can be challenging, but each new place offers a chance to grow and learn. Embrace the journey, knowing that every step shapes who you become.

2.) Follow Your Dreams, but Be Flexible
It’s important to pursue your dreams, like my desire to work in the film industry, but also be willing to adjust your path. Sometimes, life leads you to unexpected and fulfilling opportunities you hadn’t considered.

3.) Recognize the Importance of Stability
Even if you move often, find a place that feels like home. Having a consistent anchor, such as Los Angeles for me, provides a sense of stability and belonging amidst the changes.

4.) Reflect on Your Choices
Take time to reflect on your life decisions and experiences. Contemplating the path not taken helps you appreciate your journey and understand the value of your choices, whether they were planned or spontaneous.

5.) Build Connections Wherever You Go
No matter where life takes you, prioritize building meaningful connections. Acting like a local, even in a new place, enriches your experience and creates a supportive network that can make any city feel like home.

May these lessons serve as a guide on your personal path.
