When people are on their deathbed, many express regrets about not being able to do the things they wanted. To avoid reaching that stage of regret, here are some tips on how to live a life without regrets:
1. Envision Your Ideal Life
Imagine how you want your life to look. Just as you would map out a journey by entering your starting point and final destination, do the same with your life. Think about where you want to be in 5, 10, or 20 years. Ask yourself questions like, “If my life were a movie, how would it look?” Then, map out a plan to get there.
2. Be Flexible on Your Life’s Journey
Things don’t always go as planned, and it’s crucial to be adaptable. For example, I initially thought I needed to go to nursing school to move to the United States. However, my father’s efforts allowed me to move without completing the nursing degree. Without a backup plan, I still wanted to attend college but was unsure what to study. Nursing school was merely a means to an end—a way to get a job in the U.S. I had to adjust my plans several times. For instance, I joined the military, hoping to become a naval officer, but when that didn’t work out, I had to pivot again. Reflecting back, I realize I should have tried harder, like losing weight to meet the naval officer training requirements. Later, I aimed to work for the United Nations to make a global impact, but I didn’t get the job. Each time, I gave up too soon. Flexibility and persistence are key.
3. Pursue Your Passions
If at first, you don’t succeed, try again. Persistence is crucial. Consider Michael Jordan, who often spoke about the many times he failed as a basketball player before becoming the greatest. We rarely hear about his failures, only his successes. Like Jordan and other great individuals who succeeded through passion and persistence, keep trying. Personally, I’ve wanted to have my own digital space to share positive thoughts since 2017. It took me seven years to finally take action. Life kept me busy, but that’s no excuse. The important thing is that I eventually made it happen.
4. Learn and Grow
Whether through personal experiences, travel, or learning from others, growth is essential. I observe people’s lives and how they handle situations, then apply their lessons to my own life. For example, I watched my sisters make mistakes so I wouldn’t have to repeat them, saving time for other pursuits. Traveling is another great way to learn and grow. If you have the means and time, explore different cultures and languages. Travel broadens our minds and horizons, changes our perspectives, and adds value to our life experiences.
5. Seize the Day
Today is the best time to start doing the things you’ve always wanted to do. If you can’t do everything at once, schedule them into your calendar and follow through. Don’t wait for tomorrow, as it may never come. We can never get back the time we have lost. In short, carpe diem!
My hope is that these tips help you on your soul’s journey through life. When you look back, may you have no regrets or at least fewer of them. May your heart’s desires and dreams be fulfilled.
