What are you passionate about?

Since childhood, I was raised with a strong awareness of God. My mother, a devout Catholic, faithfully said her prayers day and night. As a child, my parents would take the entire family to Sunday Mass. I found it challenging to sit through mass and listen to the priest’s sermon. I asked her why she did this when God didn’t seem to answer her prayers. She told me that if I wanted to know how to live my life the right way, I should get to know God. Additionally, she emphasized that we will face God when our lives are over. This set the tone for my lifelong pursuit and passion for getting to know God.

Reason No. 1: Knowing My Creator

I want to know as much as possible about my Creator. When starting a romantic relationship, we naturally seek to understand the other person—their likes, dislikes, personality, and essence. It’s the same with God. My quest to understand “Who are You?” drives me to seek answers. Since God is a spiritual being and I cannot see Him physically, I turn to nature and the Bible for evidence. The Bible says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). So, I read the Bible to get to know Him and spend time in nature.

Reason No. 2: The Mystery and Fascination of God

I find God, a spiritual being, mysterious and fascinating. The Bible describes God as spirit (John 4:24) and as ultimate love (1 John 4:8). The whole world seeks love in the wrong places when it can be found in God. According to the Bible, “God is love” (1 John 4:16). I believe in the Bible for the same reasons I believe in history books; I consider the writers of the Bible as historians inspired by God.

Reason No. 3: Finding My Identity in God

I can find my identity in God as I get to know Him better. I understand God as my ultimate parent. My mom always said that I borrowed my life from God and will ultimately have to give it back. Psalm 139:13-14 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” God has made an investment in me, so I need to make the best of what He has given me.

Reason No. 4: Learning to Love from God

God is love, and He can teach me how to love as He does. No one understands love better than its Creator. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). It makes sense to learn about love from the One who created it. God is the ultimate subject matter expert on love.

Reason No. 5: Eternal Life with God

I want to spend eternity with God. The Bible describes God as everything good (James 1:17). So, if God is good, why is there evil in the world? Evil exists because people choose to reject God. Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” We always have a choice. We can choose to overcome evil with good or succumb to it. I choose to follow God, embracing His goodness and love.
